Pieter van Gent Winery and Vineyard is a family business steeped in tradition. Operating since 1979, the winery produces a range of outstanding hand-crafted wines that are made using organic growing methods.

The winery is named after its founding father, Pieter van Gent. Pieter began his winemaking career in Holland where he worked predominately with French wines. In 1959 he migrated to Australia where he continued to study and produce wine, making the first Australian chardonnay at Craigmoor Winery in 1971. Eight years later, Pieter set up his own winery and vineyard, bringing with him chardonnay clippings from Craigmore, the oldest in Australia.

Pieter’s talents as a winemaker have seen him win an impressive string of accolades over his winemaking career. In 2006, he retired from the business, leaving operations to his son, Philip. Philip continues the style of winemaking set out by his father more than 25 years ago – the vines are left to grow naturally with as little interference as possible.

The Mudgee region is a naturally dry area with hot and cold extremes – think bitterly cold morning frosts in winter and sweltering hot days in summer. This unique climate is intensified during the winemaking process, ensuring each Pieter van Gent wine is truly different, expressing a story of the conditions in which the grapes were grown.

The 100-acre property houses a wide array of grape varieties, allowing the team to produce a comprehensive range of verdelho, chardonnay, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, durif, moscato giallo and sangiovese, just to name a few.

The full range of wines can be sampled at the authentic barrel hall, which doubles as a Cellar Door. Here, the company’s flagship wine – the Mudgee Pipeclay White Port – can be tasted. This unusual wine is a smooth and luscious drop with nectar overtones; it is delicate and dynamic, equally as delicious served over ice with fresh lime, as an aperitif, or enjoyed after dinner.

Pieter van Gent Winery and Vineyard also offers self-contained accommodation for those who wish to sample the wines long into the night. Nestled among the 40 acres of vines, creeks and native wildlife, Pipeclay Lodge, Bushman’s Cottage and The Studio offer an accommodation style to suit every occasion. The friendly staff can also organise bicycle hire for guests to experience a more intimate tour of the surrounding wine country.

The winery also features a chocolate and wine package, in which guests are treated to two of the most unique wines in Australia, matched with two sumptuous chocolate pralines hand-crafted by chocolatier, Amelie Bischof. Amelie comes from a family with nearly a century of experience in the chocolate and coffee businesses, preparing fresh, authentic chocolates each week.

Pieter van Gent Winery and Vineyard is home to thousands of vines, the fruits of which are hand-crafted to create bottles of unique wine that tell a story of their terroir and winemaker. The natural beauty of the region and historic Cellar Door offer perfect spaces in which to sample these wines and appreciate their complexities.
