At Bunnamagoo Wines, the focus is on creating and celebrating unique, traditionally made wines. Only a short drive from the heart of Mudgee, the modern and sophisticated winery and Cellar Door located among the vines at Bunnamagoo offers the perfect setting to taste the range of fine wines made on-site.
Stuart and Deb Hughes have overseen Bunnamagoo Wines since its inception in 1994. Originally Stuart approached the Paspaley family about planting a small section of vineyard at their historical property, Bunnamagoo. They went ahead, and the wines produced from the vines were more successful than Stuart had ever imagined. Demand saw the operation expand to include a second vineyard, Eurunderee, and in 2009, a winery and Cellar Door were also opened on this property.
Talented Winemaker, Robert Black, combines traditional winemaking skills with modern techniques to create the award-winning wines for Bunnamagoo. Robert’s experience in wine regions throughout Australia and France allows him to create elegant yet approachable wines that are driven by ripe, fruit flavours.
Robert has a hand in every part of the winemaking process – from fruit selection in the vineyards, all the way through to blending and bottling. The grapes used for production are sourced from Bunnamagoo’s two vineyards, both of which are located in Central Ranges of New South Wales but are markedly different in their terroir. Grapes from the Bunnamagoo vineyard create distinctive regional, cool-climate wines, while grapes from the Eurunderee property make wines with subtle nuances, quite different to those from Bunnamagoo.
After picking, Robert allows the wine time to slowly mature and develop before release – this method is as far as possible from factory-made winemaking and ensures each wine develops with integrity. While this process takes longer, it ensures that the wines created are more complex and better tasting.
Bunnamagoo’s wines have individuality and a strong character. They are made to be enjoyed with food, and each of the wines, from the lighter riesling to the deep red cabernet sauvignon, are excellent table drops. The label produces a full range of small-batch wines, including chardonnay, semillon, riesling and sparkling, as well as pinot gris, shiraz, tempranillo, merlot and cabernet sauvignon.
Taste your way through these wines, or sample the flagship Bunnamagoo Chardonnay in the beautiful Cellar Door at the Eurunderee property. Robert uses a variety of hands-on techniques to create this supple and complex cool-climate chardonnay. Featuring tropical and white stonefruit flavours with subtle cashew notes, this wine is a consistent crowd pleaser.
The Cellar Door at Bunnamagoo also plays host to a variety of events throughout the year, from laid-back Sunday Sessions during the Mudgee Wine Festival in September, to the annual Bunnamagoo Mudfest International Short Film Festival. The manicured lawns and vineyard also offer a striking backdrop for weddings and other private functions.
Bunnamagoo Wines is a true celebration of Central New South Wales and the range of high quality, individual wines this terroir can produce. The modern Cellar Door allows customers to taste their way through the wine list, while enjoying the beauty of the rural setting before their eyes.
