Putting a twist on the traditional churrasco, MEET is a Brazilian barbecue with a difference. Set just one street back from Newcastle’s shoreline, it embodies everything food means to the Brazilian people: friends, family and a whole lot of fun.
Head Chefs and owners, Luciano Cruz and Daniel Pires, have teamed up with Mitchell Steel and Jarrod Mullen to add some spice to Newcastle’s dining scene. Luciano and Daniel grew up together in Rio de Janeiro and have worked in all sorts of venues across Brazil, Europe and Australia, from tiny cafes to hatted- restaurants. For them, nothing compares to the food they enjoyed back home, so when it came to opening a venue down under, there was only one option.
If you’re in a rush for lunch, stop by MEET and BREAD, where you can try succulent, spit-roasted meats atop a choice of bread, served with salad, a range of sauces and crispy fries. There’s also coffee from the local Sprocket Roasters so you can get your afternoon caffeine fix.
If you’ve come for the full Brazilian dining experience, dive in with the traditional churrasco menu. The food speaks for itself, but don’t be surprised to find the head chefs chatting to customers throughout the night, sharing their passion and providing very personalised service.
This is an all-you-can-eat experience that you’ll want to make the most of. The tender, melt-in-your-mouth meats are slowly barbecued over wood and carved at your table. The smoker delivers nine-hour smoked pork ribs and 12-hour smoked beef brisket. Everything is seasoned with a range of herbs, dry rubs and marinades to offer an unbeatable taste. If that’s not enough, you’ll also be presented with a selection of traditional Brazilian sides.
While MEET predominately caters for carnivores, there are also some irresistible vegetarian options to be found. The chefs have a strong knowledge of vegan food so be prepared for vibrant vegetables and stunning salads.
Brazilians drink 200 million litres of Cachaça each year, so take the edge of with MEET’s version of the classic caipirinha, the Sao Paulo. This refreshing cocktail is packed full of Cachaça and shaken with fresh lime and plenty of brown sugar. Vinofiles will be happy too, with a selection of local and South American wines on offer.
When designing the space, the pair reached out to their favourite artist from Brazil, LOBO, to see if he could create a customised piece and have it shipped to Australia in time for the opening. A twist of fate landed LOBO in Melbourne a few weeks before the opening so he was able to hand-deliver his creation on time! The stunning pop-art piece features some of Brazil’s most iconic attractions and cultural elements and complements the venue’s cool, clean design.
The cultural immersion doesn’t stop there. Each February, MEET brings Carnivale to Newcastle with entertainment, drumming and capoeira performances all week long. Before too long, the team hope to be offering a food truck for events, complete with a charcoal barbecue.
If Rio de Janeiro seems a little too far away, turn to MEET. The modern churrasco will transport you to the sands of Copacabana beach with just one bite.
