If you’re headed to Orange, then the first stop of your journey should be Ferment the Orange Wine Centre and Store. Ferment showcases the best that Orange and the surrounding wine region have to offer.
The wine centre is the brainchild of Simon Forsyth. The ex-advertising executive was looking for a tree-change when he headed to Orange in 2009. For Simon, wine had always been a personal passion; ‘I used to be an amateur drinker, now I’m a professional drinker.’ In reality, Simon is much more than that.
Orange’s wine-growing region has very distinctive characteristics. It’s Australia’s only wine region that is defined by its altitude, ranging from 600 meters above sea level right up to 1,100 meters above sea level. Despite the growing popularity of Orange, it is still an emerging wine growing region – and one that deserves celebration.
After moving to Orange, Simon realised that there was no one central location for wine lovers in the town of Orange. His vision was to create a regional hub that would replicate the experience of a cellar door but one that reflected the whole region of Orange. When a beautiful heritage building became available, Simon seized the opportunity to create Ferment.
While the building may be steeped in history, the interior is bright, fresh and modern. Edison light bulbs dangle from the ceiling clustered in suspended wine barrels, and state-of-the-art Enomatic wine dispensers allows visitors to sample, then purchase a wide range of exceptional local wines.
Among some of the wines on offer at Ferment, you’ll find Carillion Wines and Cooks Lots Wines, both rated 5 Red Stars by James Halliday. If you’re after a taste of Orange, start with Cooks Lots’s Sauvignon Blanc. The 2015 vintage created a stir throughout the industry, winning the Gold Medal Trophy for Best Sauvignon Blanc in the New South Wales Wine awards. The aromatic, tropical drop with a crisp and well balanced palate was an instant hit and helped place Orange on the map as a wine region to watch.
To keep your appetite satiated as you work your way through the wines on offer, Simon has put together a range of salumi and cheeseboards. Once you’ve had your fill, you can also borrow one of Ferment’s bikes and set off to explore the township of Orange.
Ferment works closely with wine legend, Peter Bourne. Peter assists Simon with curating the list of wines on offer, while also selecting offerings for their wine club. Ferment Society delivers four cases of wine to your door each year, with six carefully selected bottles that reflect the four distinct seasons of Orange.
