Delano Coffee Roasters

A psychologist, a brand strategist and a marketing expert walked into a cafe… No actually, they opened a cafe, and the results are no joke!
In fact, the three partners not only opened a cafe, but a specialty coffee roastery, too – the only one in the Illawarra. And the name? That came about right at the start, when one of the founders was on holiday in Florida, sitting outside his hotel, enjoying the sand, surf and sun. He decided in that moment he wanted to start a specialty coffee company. And the hotel he was sitting at? The Delano Hotel in Miami.
If you haven’t guessed already, Delano Specialty Coffee is a real passion project; led by the sort of passion that makes grown men leave behind their lucrative professional careers to roast coffee. That passion carries on right through the entire Delano team; Manager, David Ryan, also left a high flying career, because he liked to be around people and coffee more than he liked being around money
Head Roaster, Drew Corbin, and Head Barista, David Mason, lead a team of coffee professionals who are ready, willing and able to give advice to their customers. The staff are happy to talk you through the coffee choices, all of which are roasted on-site and delivered fresh.
Delano Specialty Coffee offers rotating seasonally focused single origins as well as their own blends. Peek through the window into the roastery and see them being created right before your eyes. The house blend was specially developed for the cafe and is roasted to have a high acidity that cuts through milk nicely, while retaining sweetness and complexity.
Delano Specialty Coffee is located in an industrial area of Wollongong, without any real passing foot traffic. That doesn’t stop a steady stream of coffee lovers following their GPS’ though, and as a result, the clientele is made up of tradies and blue collar workers from the area, as well as students and coffee aficionados who find the short drive well worth it. There’s breakfast and lunch on offer as well, Monday to Friday.
Try the cold drip or the V60 for something a bit different, secure in the knowledge that every coffee you drink at Delano Specialty Coffee is made from specialty grade coffee, has been sourced from ethical and sustainable origins, and then roasted in season and served fresh. Take a bag home with you, too – we recommend the Seasonal Organic Blend, with its flavours of malt, caramel and cocoa.
Delano source their coffee from all over the world – from Ethiopia, Tanzania and Kenya in Africa, to Brazil, Colombia and Guatemala in the Americas, to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea closer to home. The staff have a lot of stories about the origins of their beans and stories from their own travels – perhaps they’ll spin you some yarns if you ask.
