In the hills behind Byron Bay, with views over macadamia plantations and rainforest, lies a family owned and operated roastery just five minutes from the beach.
Annie and Franco Ivancich’s boutique roastery, Byron Bay Coffee Company, celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014 – and they’re still passionate about the evolving coffee industry. Annie and Franco left Sydney with their children in 1989 and settled onto 12 acres in Newrybar, which they transformed into a coffee plantation. Franco took care of the farming, blending and roasting with Annie selling the beans at the local markets and establishing the sales and administration side of things. Twenty-five years on, they are still operating as a family business and now source only premium beans from all around the world.
The Byron Bay Coffee Company supplies cafes Australia wide, as well as internationally. It produces four espresso blends, four plunger blends and a Mexican Mountain Water decaf for both espresso and plunger. The company also created a line of chocolate-coated coffee beans, drinking chocolates and chocolate coated macadamias. All of the products can be ordered from the website and delivered to your door.
Franco has over twenty years experience roasting coffee and believes the key to good roasting is to enjoy what you do. He is quite the perfectionist and is continually running trials, adjusting temperature and airflows and searching for the roast profiles that will bring the optimum flavours out of the beans. He chooses to blend coffee so that different single origins complement and enhance each other, creating well balanced and full bodied flavours. The result is a unique tasting cup that is vibrant, rich and complex, and the critics agree, with more than 120 coffee awards to their name since 1999.
Franco and Annie source their beans from the coffee distributor Cofi-com. The beans come from all over the world, depending on availability and quality. At any one time they may be roasting beans from Indonesia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Mexico, Honduras, Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania. Establishing good relationships with cafes, providing ongoing support and barista training is also key to how the business operates.
Coffee is one of the most traded commodities of our times and to Byron Bay Coffee Company that means it is particularly important to use environmentally and ethically sustainable practices where possible. Annie and Franco feel strongly about providing certified organic and Rainforest Alliance certified coffee to their customers. Clients are supplied with BioPak takeaway cups and branded KeepCups. Currently the company also supports Rainforest Rescue and Sea Shepherd.
The team at Byron Bay Coffee Company share a passion for all things coffee. Every step, from sourcing quality beans to the final cup of coffee is exciting to them. You can taste this passion in every cup.
