As the sun shines through the leafy trees that line McLachlan Street, warmth and light stream into Bills Beans East Orange, a cosy corner cafe housed in a former butcher shop. Renowned for its welcoming atmosphere, quality coffee and fresh and flavoursome menu, it’s a favourite for both locals and visitors.
Bills Beans East Orange falls under the direction of Ricky Carver and Carlie Beer. With a wealth of hospitality experience behind them – Ricky as a chef, and Carlie in front of house management – the pair took on this beloved local treasure and made it their own. Together they have created a warm and friendly space that locals rely on for their daily caffeine fix.
The cafe, as you may have guessed, serves Bills Beans. These are roasted just around the corner at the local roastery, renowned for its standout blends and single origins. At Bills Beans East Orange, the beans are displayed in dispensers behind the counter, enticing you to not only try one in-store, but take some home with you. The signature House Blend is served daily, along with a rotating selection of single origins.
Coffee is at the centre of the venue, but an innovative and seasonal menu prepared by Chef, Nicola Salter, is also available. Nicola is skilled and passionate and after more than 20 years’ experience in kitchens across Australia, she knows how to create good quality dishes that highlight fresh ingredients. A move from Sydney to experience the lifestyle of Orange gave her an avenue to produce food that demonstrates her love of local produce, of which the area has in spades.
Local suppliers include Trunkey Creek and Johnny’s Eggs, but Nicola also sources seasonally grown fruit and vegetables from orchards and farms, as well as olive oil, wheat and nuts from nearby producers.
The menu is based on seasonal availability, but regular brunch favourites include the one-pan baked eggs, served on house beans with citrus feta, avocado and Turkish soldiers, or the mushroom, leek and provolone croque madame. Come lunch time, the roast chicken salad with green goddess dressing, walnuts and parmesan croutons will leave you feeling fresh and full.
For those with a sweet tooth, the choices are endless – pick from an ever-changing selection of fresh cakes, tarts, pastries and muffins. The variety of fruit that Orange provides is highlighted in Nicola’s love of baking, and with tasty treats like frangipane tarts with local berries and stone fruits, and carrot cake with hazelnut toffee praline, you won’t be disappointed.
Bills Beans East is relaxed and cosy, with wooden tables and bench seating creating a community space that feels like your own living room. A selection of local art pieces are also scattered around the cafe – from the pot plants in the window sills to the wall hangings and framed pieces.
Bills Beans East Orange is certainly a hub for local coffee aficionados, but it is much more than that – it’s a warm and inviting cafe offering quality food, attentive and friendly service and consistently good coffee. Once you discover it, you’ll be coming back time and time again.
