Tides Waterfront Dining may have received some very prestigious awards – ‘Best Seafood Restaurant, Sunshine Coast’ two years running, ‘Australia Good Food Guide 1 Chef’s Hat’ two years running, and ‘Australia’s Best Wine Lists 1 Goblet’ three years running – but the passion and focus is to make every one of its customers feel like a VIP. This family owned and operated restaurant is striving to push the boundaries of the Caloundra dining scene and the results are clear: Caloundra is no longer just fish and chips.
Having said that, seafood is naturally the focus of the venture, situated as it is on the world’s finest coastline (although we may be biased!) All of Tides’ seafood is local to southeast Queensland, including its spanner crabs, scallops, prawns, fish and calamari. Mushrooms and tomatoes are sourced from farmers in the Maleny and Beerwah areas and the meat comes from Kilcoy. With produce like this on your doorstep, why wouldn’t you take advantage?
Owner/Manager, Michael Mulhearn, and Head Chef, Anthony Shone, have created a dining experience that not only appeals to the never-ending parade of tourists, but has also built a regular clientele of locals. Tides’ menu changes with the seasons, keeping up with the freshest produce available. Depending on the time of year, try the seared yellowfin tuna with cucumber, olive potato, asparagus, scallop Carpaccio and celeriac, or the salmon and scallops with lobster tortellini, black sausage and lemon beurre blanc.
For the avid food lover, Anthony has put together a Chef’s Tasting Menu with matching wines (from France, Italy, Spain, WA and SA). You’ll start with amuse-bouches of his own creation and light pea and tarragon soup with lobster tortellini. Follow this with braised New Zealand lamb in a brioche and herb crumb, with sweet onion and capsicum gel and mint yoghurt dressing. Complete the menu with a selection of French and Australian cheeses and finally, save room for the pastry chef’s creations.
With 270-degree views overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Pumicestone Passage and the picturesque Glasshouse Mountains, it’s no wonder Tides Waterfront is the venue of choice for so many Caloundra brides. The restaurant is available for private functions and the team will happily work with you to create your perfect menu.
Michael started in hospitality just so he could afford his petrol bill at university but, as with so many chefs, he got a taste for the industry and has never looked back. As for his location, he couldn’t be happier. “Once you visit Caloundra,”
he said, “you will be looking in the real estate section for your next house. It has the perfect mix of friendly local atmosphere, and a buzzing tourist season. And best of all, there is always a beach waiting for you.”
