Christopher and Larissa White have been everywhere, man! With over 25 years’ experience in restaurants, they have also worked and travelled in London, Bath, Leeds, Nepal, Central America, Asia, Europe – and Sydney. In fact, they met while working in a restaurant on the Sunshine Coast.
Their extensive travels meant they were able to eat and drink with locals all across the world, with the aim of gaining a deep appreciation for different cuisines and customs. They saw everything as a learning opportunity, and gained as much experience as they could in the hope of one day opening their own restaurant.
It was Chris and Larissa’s experience, trekking in the Annapurna region of Nepal that gave them the name for their future business. They finished their trek in Pokhara, and became regulars at a little lakeside bakery called Hungry Feel Bakery. They were so fond of the people and their hospitality that they wanted to keep a little piece of that time with them. They added the ‘Eating House’ as part of their wish to embrace food from different cultures under one roof, with an emphasis on authenticity.
So, Hungry Feel Eating House opened in Buderim in 2001, right in the heart of the Buderim village. It’s a restaurant that prides itself on being for the community, and offers four menus a year, changing with the seasons. Around 90 % of the produce used at Hungry Feel comes from the Sunshine Coast or southeast Queensland and 20% of that comes from its own kitchen garden! Their favourite growers and artisans include Cedar St Cheeserie, Landsborough zucchini flowers, Moya Valley free range chicken, Woombye Cheese Co. camembert, Elimbah raspberries and Shires fig farm.
Chris demonstrates his vast travel experience in his menu. There’s nasi ayam goreng with fried egg and crispy shallots, pan-fried potato and saffron gnocchi with garden vegetables and pecorino cheese, and the paella Costa del Sol, to name just a few.
If you’re after a lighter snack, or sharing with friends, be sure to order from the Small Bites menu. We suggest you try the soft taco with pulled Kingaroy pork, avocado, pickles and chipotle mayo; or the pork and Shitake mushroom spring rolls; as well as a serve of the crumbed lamb brains with tartare sauce. Regulars can’t go past the cauliflower croquettes, with grilled halloumi and curry vinaigrette.
Hungry Feel Eating House was the Winner of the Best Breakfast Restaurant and Best Cafe Restaurant in the Queensland Savour Australia Restaurant and Catering HOSTPLUS Awards for Excellence in 2014. And it isn’t hard to see why.
It’s open for breakfast and lunch Tuesday to Saturday and for dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It offers a great choice of wines, beers and ciders, including the local SCB Summer Ale from the Sunshine Coast. And it boasts a 1-glass rating in the Wine gourmet traveller wine list of the year awards for 2010-2014. The enoteca is open all day Thursday, Friday and Saturday for small bites and drinks.
Chris and Larissa’s professional, attentive service, and consistent, well balanced and innovative food, are a real treat for those spending time in Buderim.
