Harajuku Gyoza are taking the traditional dumpling and turning it to a new level, offering gyoza groupies the ultimate in izakaya-style dining.

Promising ‘yum and fun’ dumplings for all, the Fortitude Valley outpost offers much more than just a simple dinner. It’s an experience that blends crazy Japanese pop culture and design with the sort of food enjoyed regularly by tired and hungry salary men in Japan, who drop into their local pub for a casual meal and beer after work.

Made fresh daily, the small bundles of goodness are cooked centre-stage in the middle of the bar, giving guests a front row seat to all the action. A dynamic sizzling steam fest, the expert team behind the grills produce a simple menu of pork, duck chicken, whole prawn and vegetarian gyoza in grilled and poached form.

If you’re not as devoted to dumplings, there’s also a succinct menu of shared side dishes and popular izakaya meals, including chicken karaage, pork katsudon, beef gydon and pork belly kakuni. Vegetarians are well catered for with tempura eggplant, white miso salad and best of all: dessert gyoza.

You read that right. Choose between salted caramel, nutella banana and peanut butter white chocolate gyoza for a sweet end to the night.

Harajuku isn’t all about the food though. Fully licensed, it offers Kirin on tap and constantly changing list of Japanese bottled beer, as well as a curated and considered wine list. If you’re after the full experience, order sake, poured traditionally by overflowing the glass into a small drinking box.

With four venues around Brisbane, a new outpost in Sydney and plans to expand, Harajuku is slowly spreading their love of dumplings to the masses. We’d get in quick though – with such delicious bundles of goodness on offer, a seat in one of the restaurants is hot property.
