Reflecting the by-gone days of hippy communes, the Burleigh Heads cafe, Commune, is delivering on all fronts. Maintaining a communal ethic where the collective aim is to live sustainably and in harmony, Commune dispenses a wholesome, nutritious menu alongside healthy juices and specialty coffee.
Be greeted by lively music, rising amongst the friendly chatter of locals and visitors enjoying the atmosphere in a mish-mash, vintage style decor. Grab your favourite magazine and pull up a well-worn seat out the front or side of the cafe, or revel in casual conversation turned deep discussion and boisterous music inside. You can even take your argument to a game of ping pong to find the winner when the table is pulled out on Sundays.
Commune was the brain-child of Nerissa and Mitchell McCluskey. When they came across a “For Lease” sign on the character-filled, old butcher shop, they jumped at the opportunity. They just knew that this was the space that dreams could be built on. They decided to share their dream with the local community, to connect their ethos of local, organic produce in a home that could inspire deep and meaningful dialogue.
Together they have produced a menu that showcases local, organic and wholesome produce. There are freshly made juices to delight customers after a hot day at the beach, or smooth, full-bodied Campos coffee expertly brewed by baristas. Cold-drip is also available, cold and black, or order it as an iced latte.
Of course with a massive band of loyal followers on the Gold Coast, aka ‘cult status,’ the baristas are under the pump pushing out perfect brews all day, every day.
Every Monday it’s a meat-free, vegetarian-only menu. Try the spiced baked chickpeas or the sautéed garlic and chive mushrooms finished with truffle oil. Whether you are slightly peckish or totally ravenous, Commune offers plenty of choice with light or more substantial menu items including traditional Eggs Benedict, or Nutella and caramelised banana pancakes.
Try the signature corn fritters filled with super fresh, green coriander and served with a side of house made chilli jam. You could eat this any time of the day! Mitch and Nerissa support the local, organic market and make everything in-house where possible.
A brand new venture for Nerissa and Mitchell is the Commune farm which is being set up to enable the cafe to include their own fresh produce to guarantee their sustainability. This extension to the Commune dream has been a result of the wonderful support of customers and the local community from day one some four years ago.
Without doubt it is a locally shared appreciation for good health and wellbeing –
a true commune of thought, ideas and philosophy.
