What do you get when four pro surfers, an ex-Billabong brand director and an award-winning brewer walk into a bar? The answer in this case is a pretty rad beer company – Balter Brewing.
Balter Brewing was born from seven guys’ passion for beer and the experiences that beer fosters, bringing people from all walks of life together.
To ‘balter’ means to do something you love or enjoy, without particular talent. This could be anything from surfing to sipping away on a beer after a day of work. The boys behind Balter wanted to celebrate this and get involved in Australia’s expanding craft-beer scene.
Familiar faces front the team – three-time world champion surfer, Mick Fanning, one-time world champion, Joel Parkinson and pro surfers, Bede Durbidge and Josh Kerr are all co-owners. They are joined by amateur surfer and brand manager, Stirling Howland and multi award-winning brewer, Scott Hargrave.
Scott started off as an avid home brewer in 2006 and within a year he received recognition at the Australian Amateur Brewing Championships. He went on to work at Sunshine Coast Brewery and Byron Bay Brewing Company where he won awards at the Australian International Beer Awards.
At Balter, Scott uses the best available ingredients combined with natural processes and the latest technology to deliver the freshest flavours
Balter’s current brews include a fruity XPA. What it lacks in colour, this beer makes up for in flavour; it has a floral aroma and a punchy tropical taste that will leave the tastebuds wanting more. Its excellent taste was recognised earlier this year when it won two gold medals at the Australian Craft Beer Awards.
The XPA, along with the full Balter range, is available at ‘Balter HQ’. Housed in a spacious warehouse, this space oozes the cool of an industrial Melbourne venue. Exposed brick, concrete, and copper pipes are plentiful and a colourful feature piece by Frank and Mimi adorns one wall.
A 12-tap beer wall also stands out. Surrounded by a huge wrap around bar, guests are encouraged to pull up a seat and sample the brews on tap. Balter also welcomes food vans each day, which serve delicious street food to the hungry beer fanatics who visit.
Balter Brewing is based on an appreciation for beer and a love of laid-back lifestyles. Balter HQ is a space where beer lovers from across the world can unite, enjoy a craft beer or two and chat about the day’s surf.
Balter has certainly entered Australia’s growing beer scene with a bang.
Balter’s beers are currently available at liquor stores across the country. For more details head to the website.
