Where to stay
Crown Metropol Melbourne
8 Whiteman St, Southbank VIC
03 9292 6211
When visiting a new city, staying close to the action means less time travelling and more time exploring. However, too close, and the hustle and bustle may be overwhelming. Crown Metropol Melbourne strikes that perfect balance, offering five-star opulence away from crowds, but just a hop, skip and jump from the CBD.
Owned and operated by Crown Hotels, the 28-level luxury hotel is just one street away from Southbank’s main promenade. It is home to 658 rooms and suites, as well as a fitness centre, sky-high bar and business centre, leaving no stone unturned when it comes to the ultimate hotel experience.
There are six different types of rooms on offer, each of which feature specially commissioned works of art, bespoke fittings and designer furniture. The Luxe room includes either a king bed or two queens, and a spacious work desk for those travelling on business. An oversized shower dominates the bathroom, sitting by a large vanity and privacy screen.
For something with lots of space, The Loft is the go-to. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide jaw-dropping views of the city skyline below, which are best admired from the contemporary lounge area. You’ll be able to sink further into luxury with a deep-soaking bath, where an LCD television is perfectly placed for bathtub watching.
Rolling out of bed, into the shower and out of your room may sound difficult, but those who persevere will be rewarded. On level 27, you’ll find one of the city’s most stunning indoor pools. With breathtaking views across the city, it’s a picture-perfect spot for a dip. If you’re keen to keep up your fitness regime, superb gym facilities will have you working up a sweat in no time.
After a few laps of the pool or a few kilometres on the treadmill, your stomach may be rumbling. Luckily, you won’t have to travel far to get your fill. Crown Metropol’s flagship restaurant, Mr. Hive Kitchen and Bar, offers contemporary dishes in a rustic dining area. Stop by for the first meal of the day to enjoy dishes like the buttermilk pancake triple stack, topped with honey butter, caramelised banana and pistachio crumble, or ricotta hotcakes with smoked salmon, lemon myrtle and a balsamic glaze.
If you arrive at the opposite end of the day, turn to the dinner menu. It’s full of fresh, Australian ingredients, converted into plates like crab cigar with celeriac, fresh apple and crisp bread, and basil ravioli with tomato fondue, pecorino cheese and pine nuts.
However, Mr. Hive isn’t your only option when it comes to drinking and dining. There’s also a host of world-class restaurants on your doorstep, including Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Nobu, Koko and Long Chim.
Crown Metropol defines style. Between the exceptional accommodation, fantastic facilities and wide range of dining options, there’s something for everyone.
