Until recently, Wine 1160 was the dream of political advisor Prabir Majumdar, eager to plant his roots in Melbourne after spending most of his life travelling the world. As of February, his dream is now a reality.
A left-of-centre destination for foodies and wine buffs alike, Wine 1160 is first and foremost a wine bar. The 160-strong wine list presented an opportunity for Prabir to tell a story of his travels, as well as present a food offering that complements them in a unique and delicious way. In his own words, ‘I am bringing my learnings from little villages and roadside stalls to the local community in Stonnington’.
Setting itself apart from conventional restaurants, Wine 1160 looks to celebrate independent artisanal producers, showcasing wines based on the values and practices of the makers themselves. The resultant wine menu is both exciting and refreshing, with a selection of benchmark wines available by the glass.
The food menu, designed by chefs Sarah Porz (Valentino) and Michele Curtis, revolves around wine bar staples – think cheese boards and charcuterie. But that’s not all – on top of the classics, Sarah and Michele have crafted a creative collection of small dishes that primarily complement specific wines. Those who choose to sip on a glass of the NV André Clouet ‘Grande Reserve’ Brut will be urged to snack on a plate of popcorn with gruyere salt. Others who would prefer a glass of Bertrand Bespoke Rosé are encouraged to indulge in braised eggplant with peas and spices.
Housed in an open and harmonious space, Wine 1160 is a quiet and cosy nook that celebrates the Victorian era. The intricate design is thanks to Josh Elias (Alquimie), who infused the neighbourhood bar with a relaxed and modern feel through the use of custom furniture by Franco Crea, exposed brick walls and a spacious courtyard.
Prabir and his team at Wine 1160 seek to take their customers on a journey with each glass of wine, championing some of the world’s best drops. Keeping simplicity at its heart, it’s a fresh approach on the traditions of a classic wine bar
