It’s often said that there’s no better friend than a sister. Fitzroy’s Rice Paper Scissors is no exception, sharing some of its best tips and tricks with its little sister, Rice Paper Sister.
The South-East Asian hawker style eatery has just opened on Hardware Lane and is off to a cracking start. It is the third hospitality venture of Rahmie Clowes and Shane Stafford, best friends from Sydney’s northern beaches. Inspired by their backpacker’s experiences of the south-east Asian region, the duo aimed to recreate an Asian tapas style of dining that allows you to get your hands dirty. A testament to their huge success with the Fitzroy venue, the mandate for Rice Paper Sister has taken on the best elements of the menu and maintained the focus on fresh, organic ingredients whilst adding a few flourishes of its own to create a more mature dining experience.
Rice Paper Sister’s south-east Asian cuisine spans everything from traditional to innovative, with classics like the Babi Guling of Balinese Roast Suckling Pig with Lawar young jackfruit salad served with flaky roti on offer as a menu staple. Fresh dishes like the Sashimi of sustainable hirmasa kingfish with white soy, yuzu and fermented rice vinegar are perfect for sharing, whilst more substantial large plates like the Indonesian roast chicken wrapped in banana leaf, seasoned with secret spices will send your senses to the hawker stalls of Balinese streets.
Sooth the smoky and fiery tones of wok tossed calamari drenched in red sambal sauce with a refreshing cocktail, like the El Chaperol, combining chilli infused Aperol, passionfruit and lemongrass infused gin. Appealing to the Melbourne espresso-martini obsessed crowd, finish the meal with a Vietnamese take on the cocktail classic, served thick and creamy with condensed milk infused with Vietnamese espresso and vodka.
Like its sibling, Rice Paper Sister is all about choosing your own dining experience. With attentive staff, authentic bites and a buzzing ambience, forget the scissors paper rock over where to eat tonight and head to Hardware Lane to see for yourself.
