In the heart of urban Melbourne, you’ll now find a little piece of urban France. Resto Bobo has moved into Chapel Street, serving up contemporary French fare that strays far from the stereotype of pretentious traditional French dining to rather bring you a relaxed approach to French cuisine that holds sharing among friends at its core.
Owner Dan Xerri was inspired to bring Resto Bobo to Melbourne after years of living in Strasbourg, a small cosmopolitan city in the north east of France. It is here that he fell in love with the Tarte Flambée, Resto Bobo’s signature dish, with a thin crust base, creamy fromage blanc sauce and endless options of traditional toppings that is perfect for sharing. The Strasberg experience of lunches and dinners with friends surrounding tables covered in Tarte Flambées of this flavour and that, glasses filled to the brim with French wine and conversation flowing in abundance was just the ticket for bringing this European style of eating to Windsor.
Resto Bobo is the only restaurant in Australia where you can experience Tarte Flambée in all its glory. Head Chef Guillame Theron has curated an indulgent menu featuring sophisticated flavours within the relaxed dish. Delicious combinations like the La Fermiere with Buche de chevre goats cheese, prunes, pine nuts and thyme drizzled with honey meet at the perfect point between sweet and savoury, with the nutty flavours and rich cheeses pairing beautifully with the flaky pastry base. Alternatively, take the La Belle Vie, with blue cheese and vanilla poached pear Tarte Flambée that matches the saltiness of the pungent cheese with the sweet fruity notes of pear to create a beautiful balance of flavours. Grilled steak can also be added to add another dimension of flavour.
The sharing mandate is consistent across the menu, aside from just Tarte Flambée. Charcuterie boards covered in French meats, fine cheeses and house made jams are in plentiful offering, piled high on a piece of delicious crusty bread. Fresh salads like the Salade Alsacienne with smoked bacon, pine nuts, parmesan and cranberries on a bed of rocket beautifully match the cheesy flavours of the main dishes.
In true French fashion, wine is the natural pairing for the flavoursome menu. Resto Bobo’s resident sommelier, Victoria Sharples has you well and truly covered, carefully curating a wine list consisting of French and regional Victorian wines to suit a range of tastes and experiences. An international wine judge and importer of top tier drops, Victoria took inspiration from the menu when applying her expertise to Resto Bobo’s drink options. The choice is yours – a fruity pinot blanc from the distinctive Alsace region famous for its floral drops, a crisp, light glass of citrusy Loire Valley Vouvray, or perhaps something with a little more body, like the dark, plummy flavours of the Cotes de Rhône. The thoughtful menu has your entire evening covered from aperitifs to wines, beers, cocktails, spirits and digestives meaning that no glass will be left empty for too long.
Resto Bobo is redefining how French cuisine is appreciated and experienced in Australia. From its relaxed vibe, delectable fare, buzzing ambience and attentive staff to greet you bonjour as you enter and bid you au revoir as you leave, you can be assured that your true slice of France lies at Windsor’s Resto Bobo.
