When dining at The Parlor Milkbar & Kitchen there’s a risk you’ll get so comfortable that leaving seems totally optional. This cozy eatery has become the place to be for bayside locals who have fallen in love with its welcoming presence and homely ambience.
In 2011 childhood friends Tamare Karakulahian and Bonne Squires created a place for locals to relish in good food and conversation. The ‘parlour’ is typically a place in the home where friends gather to socialise, so it it’s the perfect fit for an eatery that sources its inspiration from family.
Bonne began her prosperous career in hospitality by working at a family friend’s café in Salamanca, Hobart and Tamare was born into a family that had owned cafes for generations. In 2000 Tamare, along with her mother, opened and ran Verve cafe in Collins Street. A few years later, after years of friendship between the girls, The Parlor was born.
The friendly feel spills into the staff culture, where everyone is treated like family. Head Chef, Rinku Singh, has built the kitchen from the ground up and leads his team with peace and passion. Nothing but the best produce is sourced to make the homely meals come to life – free-range eggs are supplied by Burd Eggs while the bread comes from Brasserie Bread in South Melbourne.
In a place that feels just like home, you should expect a heartwarming menu full of food for the soul. The Parlor delivers this and more. The breakfast menu is full of traditional favourites with some personal touches, such as the
eggs benedict with crispy pork belly, or the brioche French toast with seasonal berries, fresh pear, mascarpone and maple syrup. The lunch menu is all about stocking your bellies with home-cooked delights such as the pulled pork served in a brioche bun or the house-made gnocchi with pesto and goat’s cheese.
When you can’t be bothered cooking dinner, let The Parlor do it for you. Ease into your night with the chicken liver pâté, or the mussels and clams in Napoli, garlic and parsley. Move on to the mains, where you can feast your eyes on the beef cheek braised in port and red wine, or the pork cotoletta. There are also plenty of carb-loading opportunities available with an array of delectable pastas including the house-made roast pumpkin tortellini or the all-time favourite, veal ragu pappardelle.
You might as well go all out with dessert. Treat yourself to some sugary goodness with a classic tiramisu served with biscotti, or indulge in the tangello pannacotta served with seasonal berries and citrus syrup.
An extensive wine menu complements the food. Paired with the list of local beers, it’s pretty tempting to stay for a couple more than planned. If you’re in the mood for a celebration, sit back with a cocktail in hand and admire the view of the Victorian golf course from the outside deck.
With its cozy home-style cooking and warm service, The Parlor Milkbar and Kitchen could quite easily become your home away from home.
