After the demolition of its iconic beachside location at the London Hotel, Mr. Lawrence has done a classic switcheroo with its sister venue Tenpin and reappeared just down the road on Beach Street. Thanks to an exciting Middle Eastern offering, extensive views over the bay and some fancy new digs, this local go-to looks like it’s here to stay.
The stellar team driving its success is made up of Nick Savage, Lyndal Barnes and Matt Thurley. Together, they made Mr. Lawrence at The London a Port Melbourne staple for diners from all around town. At the new beachfront venue, very little has changed. The food remains clean, fresh and full of flavour, and the staff are just as warm and friendly.
The new double storey venue flaunts panoramic views across Port Phillip Bay. Thanks to the ground floor’s impressive floor-to-ceiling windows, diners are able to sit in the communal dining room and watch the traffic out at sea, all while feasting on Mr. Lawrence’s family style mezze dishes. The upstairs section boasts a second spacious dining room, as well as a balcony that’s just screaming to be filled come summer.
While the building may have changed, the heart of the venue has remained. Old favourites remain on the menu alongside some new punchy plates, all designed to share. Diners can expect classic Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours in dishes such as the bastourma with cured beef, saffron pickles and Persian feta and the mouth-watering halloumi and feta boreks served with date jam.
The original Turkish pizzas, which fans of The London will remember fondly, have stuck around. With toppings like the spiced minced lamb, mint, yoghurt and almonds, and roast mushrooms, caramelised onion and three cheeses, choosing will prove to be the toughest task of the night.
The wine list covers the globe, featuring wines from all over Australia, Europe, New Zealand and even a drop or two from Argentina. However, if you are looking for something with a little more excitement, then look no further than the selection of cocktails.
Maintaining the charm of its old venue at The London, Mr. Lawrence has transitioned perfectly into its hot beachside property. Perfect for a quick bite during the week or a celebatory evening, it is certainly worth the journey towards the docks.
