The Meat & Wine Co knows a bit about great steaks. The South African eatery has made a name for itself among Australia’s scrupulous carnivores and it has now taken its quality steaks and extensive wines to South Yarra.
This is the third Melbourne iteration of the beloved steakhouse – if you can call it that. The refined elegance of Meat & Wine Co is certainly a cut above your average steakhouse.
Chief Visionary Officer, Bradley Michael, is the one to thank for not only bringing his concept to Australia. It’s Bradley’s most well known eatery – having established the original in his home of South Africa in 2000 – and his love for meats has expanded to four continents.
There’s a reason Meat & Wine Co has become so popular. The kitchen team works closely with suppliers and each menu item undergoes intense scrutiny and taste testing before it ends up on the menu. Each menu item tells a story that combines Meat & Wine Co’s Afro-centric flair with quality ingredients and the best cooking techniques.
The beef is sourced from breeders of Angus cattle and is carefully monitored throughout every stage of its journey from paddock to plate, ensuring only the best steaks make their way to your plate
Graze your eyes over the ‘From the Paddock’ section as you select your steak. This is the place for fussy diners – choose your cattle, choose your cut and choose your side. Take your meat-feast to the next level with a choice of sauces including African hot chilli, Madagascan green peppercorn and crumbled King Island blue cheese.
Helpful wait staff are also on hand and they’re brimming with expertise to ensure that you get the most out of your experience. Depending on your favourite cut of steak, the staff will recommend how the steak should be cooked to ensure the flavour of the meat is enhanced to its full potential.
If you like your meat on the bone, opt for the ribs. Choose from half and full racks of beef, pork or lamb, all marinated, slow cooked and finished with a flaming hot char-grill. You’re encouraged to get your hands dirty – ribs are served with a bib and a bowl of water to rinse your sticky fingers. Is there any other way to devour ribs?
The flame-grilled skewers are sure to impress. This isn’t your ordinary meat and capsicum on a skewer – show-stopping is the only way to describe these towering skewers. Simply scrape the perfectly cooked meat, fish or even kangaroo, down the skewer and into it’s waiting accompaniments.
While the focus is on mouth-watering meats, vegetarians will still be satisfied with an array of salads, risottos and sides.
But that’s only one half of the restaurant. Wine is equally as important as the meat. The list changes based on the best current vintages and reflects some of the best wines from Australia and overseas, with a focus on South Africa. There’s also a cocktail list featuring a tight list of classic concoctions as well a few liquid desserts for a sweet finish.
