Longrain Melbourne’s upstairs area has taken on a new life with the opening of Longsong. The area that was once a second storey horse stable has come to life again, this time as a contemporary bar, thanks to renowned Melbourne hospitality legends, the Van Haandel Group.
Teaming up with chef, David Moyle, John and Lisa Van Haandel have created a casual yet trendy space that complements the award-winning restaurant below through both its food and drink menus, as well as the well-thought-out design.
Longsong’s dramatic ligh- filled bar is entered via the original ramps that the horses ascended at the end of each work day. Maintaining the original stable floors alongside these ramps, the heritage building is celebrated through a minimalist design, boasting high ceilings, exposed brick walls and impressive black metal beams. The oriental aspect of its big sister venue, Longrain, is carried through with an impressive array of paper lanterns that glow from the ceiling.
David’s food menu matches this impressive interior seamlessly. Having worked in some of Australia’s most famous venues such as Hobart’s Franklin, Circa and The Pacific Dining Room, he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Longsong. Guests can expect to be treated to a menu that David has designed around wood-grilled and barbecued proteins, fresh vegetables, refreshing salads and moreish snacks. Nibble on delicious plates of Moreton Bay bugs with fish sauce, butter and wild fennel, or the wood-grilled duck with plum sauce, while you sip on a classic cocktail, can of local beer or a Longsong Spritz, such as the Bright + Bubbly, which combines Campari with pineapple and prosecco.
Longsong is a project that has been years in the making. The venue maintains the classic Melbourne charm that the building has held close to its heart for so many years. However, thanks to a few individual touches, it has become a unique place that has injected a much-needed casual element into the ever glamourous Longrain experience.
