South Yarra locals: if you’ve haven’t hit up Hunky Dory at 670 Chapel for a healthy post-gym meal or mid-week takeaway treat, can you really call yourself a local?
Although fish and chips can often fall into the ‘greasy goodness’ category of fast foods, that’s not necessarily the case at Hunky Dory – meaning the store is inevitably a hit with the wellness-conscious demographic.
Since its establishment in 2004, the family-owned chain of fish and chippies has become synonymous with high-quality seafood, and whether you want yours deep fried with potato cakes on the side or grilled and served with Super Salad and brown rice, is totally up to you.
Managing Director and Founder, Greg Robotis, says the nourishment-inspired menu came from over 90 years of family fishing history in the Greek Islands. With an emphasis on sitting down to a meal rather than taking away, elements of the Mediterranean diet shine through in his dining philosophy, as well as the menu.
“Traditionally fish and chips have been a take-away food, but we wanted to create a comfortable and casual setting where customers could dine in and enjoy a glass of wine or a beer with their food,” says Greg.
If you do want something fried on the side, the team highly recommends the potato cakes, which are made from locally grown potatoes. If that isn’t motivation enough to give them a go, then you should also know that throughout March, $1 from every potato cake sold will be donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.
If you’re not in South Yarra, don’t stress. There are eight locations across Victoria, which means a nutritious fish dinner is never too far away. For more information and to peruse the menu, check out Hunky’s website.
