It takes some clever thinking to take a long-forgotten train platform and reimagine it as a lively bar and eatery.
Luckily for the people of Melbourne, the HQ Group and Metro Trains have done just that, creating Arbory Bar & Eatery, the city’s longest bar, just steps from the Yarra River.
Designed by Jackson Clements Burrows Architects, the 150-metre space was artfully redesigned with an emphasis on timber cladding. Spreading from the Princes Bridge in the east, all the way down to Southbank Footbridge in the west, it’s home to two bars, a bustling kitchen and plenty of seating – making it the perfect spot to spend some time in the sun.
As with most pubs, bar service is the way to go here. However, unlike most pubs, Arbory is open from early breakfast through to late-night drinks, dishing out a casual and approachable food menu that champions local produce.
Start your morning with a coconut chia pudding with vanilla macerated pineapple, passionfruit, strawberry and yoghurt, or try something a little left-of-centre – the savoury French toast perhaps? It’s served with asparagus, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. Pair it with a latte or cappuccino, or wait until midday to try the cocktail version – espresso martini – available on tap.
Around the same time, the menu expands to delicious sandwiches and burgers for lunch, including the crumbed mushroom and halloumi burger, served with tomato relish is a two-hand masterpiece sitting alongside crinkle-cut chips. The double cheeseburger has also been crowned one of Melbourne’s favourites, combining two patties, bacon, pickles and tomato relish in a two-hand masterpiece.
There aren’t many combinations better than a burger and a beer. Luckily, Arbory has the latter covered with a number of craft beers and ciders from Australian breweries. The ‘on tap’ range also extends to a red and white wine, and an Aperol spritz, which combines prosecco, Aperol and soda, served with fresh orange over ice.
Summer days are best spent trying a variety of different drinks, so once you’ve exhausted your tap options, turn to the cocktail list, where multitudes of other delicious flavours are on offer. This includes the Yarra Sailor – a fresh combination of spiced rum, vodka, fresh apple juice, lemon and a dash of honey.
When the sun starts to set, the food menu also includes a selection of small and large sharing plates, including pea arancini with goat’s curd and mint, and king prawn risotto with preserved lemon pangrattato and basil. These offerings change seasonally, as the kitchen team makes the most of what they can find at the markets for menu inspiration.
