Along the quiet side streets of Abbotsford there is a little weatherboard cottage that has been transformed into a bustling restaurant with a focus on wholesome, vegetarian delights.

Josh James is the brains behind Abbotsford Pantry. And you’re in good hands with him taking the reins in the kitchen. Despite not being a strict vegetarian himself, his reputation as a vegetarian chef proceeds him.

Although Josh was vegetarian when he started working at Vegie Bar, Laki, one of the owners, introduced him to raw food. Despite originally being a bit sceptical once Josh saw the possibilities surrounding raw food his opinions changed completely.

Despite being entirely vegetarian with plenty of vegan friendly options, Abbotsford Pantry isn’t trying to create vegetarian food for vegos, Josh has set about creating meals that just happen to be vegetarian. It’s important for him that people don’t miss meat in their meals – “you don’t have to have meat to have a good meal.”

So what delights can you find at Abbotsford Pantry? For breakfast it’s hard to go past one of the wraps with a Mediterranean twist. The fluffy za’atar spiced wraps are filled with a cheesey omelette made from Inverlocch free-range eggs with Asian mushrooms, spinach and home-made relish. When partnered with a flat white from Century Lab Coffee there’s no better way to start the day.

For lunch there are tasty wood-fired pizzas to be enjoyed, with plenty of gluten free and vegan options topped with delicious roast veggies including pumpkin, capsicum, spinach and mushrooms for a protein hit.

If you’re on the go you can indulge in one of the nourish bowls filled to the brim with baked organic tofu, quinoa and pumpkin seed salad, fresh greens, edamame, roast veggies and a sesame avocado dip. Burritos are filled with spiced tofu, red cabbage slaw, avocado, and vegan cream cheese for a vegan Mexican delight.

There’s also a range of tasty salads with options ranging from chunky beetroot delights to crunchy noodle creations with Asian inspired dressings. You can also choose from an array of delightful sandwiches perfect to take away or eat in.

Whether you’re after a quick bite to eat on the run or a cruisey lunch in the courtyard, Abbotsford Pantry is a welcome addition to the north side’s health conscious dining scene.
