Finding a good butcher is like finding a good hairdresser. Once you have one you can trust, there’s no going back – even if it means driving halfway across town.
Lucky for South Yarra locals, one of Victoria’s most celebrated butchers, Cannings Butcher, has moved into the 670 Chapel precinct, meaning you don’t have to go far at all.
Whether it’s chook, lamb chops, salmon or snags on your shopping list, Cannings Butcher is your one-stop shop. Everything they do is with ethical and sustainable farming practices in mind.
All their meat is 100 percent free range, and they stock only the highest-quality Aussie produce. Free-range chickens come from Bendigo, grass-fed beef from Tasmania and saltbush-grazed Dorper lamb from South Australia. An exception is the Ora King salmon from New Zealand, chosen for its traceability and state-of-the-art farming practices, including a stocking density that never exceeds two percent – that’s two percent fish to 98 percent water.
“Some people think that’s strange – a butcher who cares about animal welfare – but I don’t get that. It’s the way it should be,” said Sam Canning, founder and Managing Director. “We even make regular donations to charities such as the Humane Society, RSPCA, Animals Australia, Guide Dogs Victoria and the Australian Marine Conservation Society.”
The final piece of the ethics puzzle is packaging – and they won’t let you down here either. They have begun phasing out polystyrene trays and plastic bags in favour of a product called Cardia (which is biodegradable and compostable) and paper bags.
