When yoga expert Steve Ross said turn up the music, Sammy Veall responded with ‘how loud?’ This positive philosophy is behind Yoga 213, a hip-hop yoga studio situated smack-bang in the middle of Richmond. Students are encouraged to take a moment to step out of the hustle and bustle of their busy lives and into the studio, to find peace and happiness, all to the tunes of old-school hip hop.
Hip-hop and yoga are not generally associated with each other. But founder, Sammy, has opened up a new world of opportunity for people who may not have previously tried yoga. Suffering third degree burns to 35% of her body after a farming accident, Sammy found solace in the freedom and practice of yoga. After moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, and dabbling in work as a chef and artist, Sammy was inspired by the roots of hip-hop yoga in Venice Beach. After growing up in South Yarra, Sammy brought a slice of LA back to the people of Melbourne.
Yoga 213 is the only studio in Melbourne to offer this type of yoga practice. The name is an ode to Long Beach’s area code, as well as the hip-hop group, 213 Crew, with Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg and Warren G.
The custom-designed, light-filled space embraces a natural palate with vibrant pops of yellow and blue dotted around the space. When you walk in, expect a calming space where natural timbers sit next to an oil portrait Sammy painted of Notorious BIG – a homage to hip-hop and the collision of yoga with music. White walls and natural light combine to present a relaxed studio, while the presence of no mirrors allows visitors to forget the distraction of other people and focus on their own practice.
Sammy teaches Vinyasa, Hatha Yin and Hip-Hop yoga classes, with chill yoga classes also available. The bathrooms in the studio are stocked with the essentials so you can freshen up and bounce back into your day, without the sweat. Hydrate after class with bottled coconut water and water available to purchase. They’ve even got you covered with yoga mats and towels for hire if you happen to forget.
If running a yoga studio wasn’t enough, Sammy and her Apparel business partner Charlotte Grigg have created an yoga wear label sold at Yoga 213. Made in Bali, the duo has control of the material and prints, and produces a range of leggings, tanks and crop tops for the fashionable and functional lady.
Sammy also offers yearly yoga retreats that provide the opportunity for deep meditation and yoga practice. Recent trips include Bali and Hawaii, and with an in-house chef on board for each journey, your mind and stomach will be well looked after.
Through its diverse range of classes, Yoga 213 combines the benefits of yoga with the old-school beats of hip-hop, creating an exercise experience that’s one of a kind.
