Sean Thompson turned to yoga after realising the toll that his work in carpentry was taking on his body.In 2014 he followed his passion for yoga therapy and Hatha practice and established Fitzroy’s Nth Yoga. His first step was to surround himself with an expert team: head teachers include Jemma Masters, who specialises in Vedic philosophy, and Annabel Sharp, who has a background in Hatha and Slow Flow styles.
The team brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to their classes, which are dedicated to enriching the physical exercise of yoga with the spiritual and meditative qualities that are often forgotten in modern classes. Their goal is to create a community of yogis keen to learn and share their practice.
The Nth name is infused with the ideas of humility and uplifting spirits, representing infinite possibility, adaptability, charm, creativity, sociability, wisdom and thought. The warehouse space exudes warmth, fitted out in a relaxed style, complete with recycled pallets, plenty of vibrant greenery and bold murals. The atmosphere is comfortable and inviting, conducive to sitting around the communal table and sipping on a complimentary tea.
Nth Yoga’s range of class styles is designed to offer you a perfect balance. The ethos of mindfulness, breathwork and alignment is key in every class, so you get the opportunity to develop your practice in whatever style resonates with you.
The Slow Flow class will bring your attention to the often neglected transitions between poses, aiming to increase your consciousness of the body, mind and breath. Vinyasa provides faster, more dynamic movement, while still keeping you in touch with your breath. Expect a challenging, fun class that will leave you energised and ready to take on the world.
Slow things down with a combination of guided meditation and yoga, or work into the body and mind with the 75 minute Yin class. Yin yoga involves longer stretches into the fascia of the muscle and connective tissue, cultivating patience while lengthening the body to release tension. The class finishes with a short Yoga Nidra, also known as ‘sleeping yoga’, to lull you into deep relaxation.
On Wednesdays and Fridays Nth Yoga offers $5 classes to encourage community involvement and to make yoga practice more accessible and affordable to everyone. Foundational courses are also available if you’re ready to make the leap from a beginner to a regular.
Other wellbeing offerings include massage, Emotional Freedom Technique coaching and private yoga classes to help get you in top form.
Nth Yoga welcomes all yogis, whether aspiring or experienced. It aims to allow you to find more depth and stillness in your practice which you can take into your everyday life.
