Leading the way as Victoria’s flagship contemporary dance company, Chunky Move seeks to redefine what is, or what can be, contemporary dance. The team is known for their unpredictability and a commitment to exploring contemporary dance through cross-genre collaborations. Alongside Chunky Move’s acclaimed performances are public classes that encourage dancers of all skill levels to embrace the health benefits of dance.
Founded in 1995 by Artistic Director, Gideon Obarzanek, Chunky Move has established itself as one of the country’s most innovative, awarded and internationally recognised performing arts companies. Today, Anouk van Dijk, a globally acclaimed Dutch choreographer, dancer and artistic director, leads the charge.
It’s this experience and dedication to the art that has made Chunky Move such a success. The building itself is a purposebuilt dance studio situated in the heart of Melbourne’s arts precinct. The space was designed by award-winning architects, Wood Marsh, and has become one of the most distinctive and recognisable buildings within the Melbourne landscape.
There are two studios used for public dance classes, with the larger one also used as a performance space. Chunky Move offers a diverse selection of public classes in contemporary dance that range from beginner to advanced levels, meaning complete novices will feel right at home. Expert hands will guide you, as all classes are taught by professional dancers currently working within the industry. Part of the teaching team is the class coordinator, Jo Lloyd, who has been performing and choreographing throughout Australia and overseas for more than 10 years.
Opt for a contemporary dance class, which is designed to encourage natural, spontaneous movement and personal interpretation, allowing you to focus on self-expression, awareness of space and body movement, and safe body alignment. It also relies on the use of body weight and efficiency of muscle use, so you’re guaranteed a good workout. You’ll begin with an extensive warm-up before building up to more elaborate dance routines, and with classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, there’s no excuse not to try it out. For those who have never stepped into a studio before or think they have two left feet, Chunky Move offers a complete beginner series – a four week course designed to get you up and moving. Perfect for fitness and strengthening muscles, these classes also have the added benefit of being really fun, meaning you won’t even notice you’re working out!
Whatever session you decide to attend, the classes at Chunky Move are the perfect way to unwind, get fit and improve flexibility and strength. Whether you’re starting out or an expert on the dance floor, the dance studio will have an option suitable for you and your health and wellbeing.
