The Stables of Como
20 Como Avenue, South Yarra, VIC
03 9827 6886
Taking over the shell that formerly served as the stables of the heritage listed Como House, The Stables of Como has brought Colonial Victoria into the twenty first century in a relaxed, country-meets-the-city affair.
Built in 1847, Como House is a blend and elegant fusion of past and present and its old stables, affectionately known by locals as ‘The Stables’, will have you feeling worlds, even eras, away from its home in South Yarra.
Encapsulating the inspiring and aristocratic history of the 160 year old Como property, the Stables has already become a much-needed refuge from the hectic Melbourne city lifestyle, without needing to travel outside of the city fringe.
The 6 metre long timber counter, which heaves with homemade wagon wheels, musk sticks, giant meringue clouds and bountiful pastries, acts as the ‘heart’ of the beautiful space and are the perfect pairings for your cup of coffee. Long communal tables also run the length of the café and are accompanied by bright white chairs, making for an adaptable space for the ebbs and flows of groups that descend upon The Stables. Quirky quotes, daily specials, and musings on life are etched into the blackboard behind the counter.
Dark green lampshades reflect the similar-coloured La Marzocco, where head barista Jay pumps out cup after cup of liquid conversation for the many ladies lunching at The Stables. Using Allpress’ Supremo Blend, the blend sources beans from Papua New Guinea (fully washed), Colombia (fully washed), and Brazil (Natural). Like all coffee, the beans are changed and selected seasonally to ensure a consistent cup profile and quality.
The Colombian is a coffee that has been grown exclusively for Allpress, where the team works directly with the growers. All beans are purchased via direct relationships with growers and people managing the farms. The roasters’ technology, Air Roasting Technology was custom-designed and built by Michael Allpress to achieve the best tasting coffee from the roasting process.
They may not be growing their own coffee onsite, but the herb and veggie garden is put to good use on the cafe’s menu, which also features some of the freshest eggs south of the Yarra from Como’s own chickens. Boasting one of Melbourne’s finest gardens, you can live momentarily in the privileged lifestyle of the historic mansion’s former owners, one of Australia’s wealthiest pioneer families.
The Stables are Melbourne’s first venue to offer guy tea – a more masculine version of the sought after tiered sandwiches and cakes. The hearty adaptation includes traditional sandwiches alongside mini burgers and free flowing Peroni. If you prefer a traditional high tea, the Stables can offer bottomless mimosas.
If you happen to book in advance, the Stables can offer picnic fare to enjoy amongst the vibrant, manicured garden setting.
