The team behind Smith & Daughters restaurant has opened a New York-style Deli in the hustle and bustle of Fitzroy that is sure to impress everyone who walks under its steel sign.
Owners and friends Shannon Martinez and Mo Wyse are behind the vegan success story. Shannon and Mo met while working together at the People’s Market, a summer outdoor festival in Collingwood. They spent the next year eating together and sharing their excitement for the pipe dream of owning and operating Smith & Daughters. Shannon’s tremendous cooking abilities and Mo’s business skills and marketing background were the perfect combination. After Smith & Daughters outgrew their kitchen space, it was only natural that the brand would expand.
Opening in June 2015 in a heritage-listed brick warehouse that once housed a factory, the pair transformed the shell of an office to a light-filled space adorned with hand painted signage and that signature touch you’ve come to expect with Smith & Daughters.
Coined ‘your neighbourhood shop’, Smith & Deli is stocked daily with delicious vegan, plant-based provisions that are 100% cruelty free. But the word vegan shouldn’t be thrown around too harshly. Head Chef, Shannon, has given the word vegan a refreshing new face-lift; so don’t come expecting any old meat- free cuisine.
At Smith & Deli you won’t even know the food is vegan. Every meal is jam packed with avour, and with so many options available, customers are truly spoilt for choice. It is the rst vegan deli in the world and uses all plant-based ingredients, with no two days in the deli-case the same. Using the best organic and local ingredients, staff source provisions from the local fruit and veg shop and work with local providers to learn about changes in seasons and productions.
It is the perfect lunchtime pit stop to stock up on all your favourite goodies, minus the nasties. The focus is convenience – creating grab-and-go dishes that are easy to eat and totally delicious. Expect grandma’s food at its nest, with pre-prepared meals like lasagna, pizza and soup, as well as sandwiches, pastries, soups and salads. Customers can expect a revolving menu including the following classics: Vegemite and cheese scrolls, vanilla slice, cauli ower and cheese pies, as well as a mammoth sandwich menu.
What’s more, Smith & Deli has your a ernoon tea and dessert needs covered too. If you’re a vegan but a lover of aky, buttery pastry, Martinez has perfected the vegan croissant, with chocolate, plain, and almond croissants on rotation. Or give the lemon tarts, salted caramel dark choc pretzel blondies, snickerdoodles, or cinnamon sugar doughnuts a go. You’ll struggle to choose just one. And don’t get too attached, the pastry case changes every day and often throughout the day.
The deli also stocks an array of provisions from different cuisines to help you whip up your favourite dishes at home, selling a wide array of sauces, dried pasta, olive oil, spices, packaged meats, tortillas and house made vegan cheeses.
And there’s no sign of slowing down the Smith & Daughters train. The pair plans to unleash more food businesses with similar names in the years to come.
