From childhood best friends comes an English-inspired cafe that has quickly become everyone’s cup of tea… or rather, coffee. Saint James brings a taste of the motherland to Malvern, serving classic British fare and specialty coffee to all.
In 2010 Craig Tate and Richard Donovan’s travels brought them to Melbourne. In true backpacker style, they worked in hospitality to pay off their trip, and to save for the next round of travel. Melbourne was the first stop on a long list of destinations, but what the two friends didn’t expect was to fall in love with the city, its people and its culture, and set down some roots of their own.
Their apartment in Windsor was right around the corner from Phil Gijsbers’ renowned brunch spot, From on High, a place they visited regularly. Craig and Richard befriended Phil, keeping in contact with him until they decided to pursue their own venture. In 2016, with the help of their mate Phil, Craig and Richard opened Saint James.Saint James is littered with inspiration from Craig and
Saint James is littered with inspiration from Craig and Richard’s childhood. The menu is infused with childhood favourites and the name pays homage to their much loved soccer team, Newcastle United – the team’s home ground is Saint James Park.
Craig and Richard share the roles of Business Manager and Head Barista at Saint James. Their aim, with the help of the impressive Slayer Steam machine, is to provide guests with the perfect coffee every time, something Craig said is a combination of technical skill, passion and creativity.
At Saint James, the boys use a seasonal blend from These Days Roasting and single origins from MAKER Fine Coffee. Made up of beans from Colombia and Brazil, the blend features tasting notes of red apple, dark chocolate and honey and is a perfect subtle pairing to the fare on offer.
In addition to excellent espresso, Saint James offers French press and cold brew, allowing customers to explore a selection of different brews. Having grown up living on cups of tea, the boys embrace these methods, allowing them fully appreciate the intricate details of each bean. Customers are encouraged to come and learn about coffee from Craig and Richard or to simply visit and embark on their own educational journey.
While the coffee side of things is largely Melbourne inspired, the menu at Saint James is heavily influenced by England thanks to Head Chef, Martin Doran. Try the signature fish finger butty with market fish and crushed pea aioli for a Melbourne twist on a childhood favourite.
Saint James combines the best of English food with Melbourne’s high quality specialty coffee. While it may look like your average Melbourne cafe, there is so much more than meets the eye.
