Rumble Coffee Roasters
8 Thompson Street, Kensington, Victoria, Australia
There’s nothing delicate about Rumble Coffee Roasters. The Kensington-based coffee roasters are shaking up the coffee game in Melbourne, delivering beans that pack a punch. Not just any old back-alley roasters, Matt Hampton, Stan Bicknell and Joe Molloy have made their mark on Melbourne’s hospitality circuit. Boasting experience running some of the city’s best cafes and kitchens, they’re responsible for sourcing, roasting and delivering Rumble’s coffee to cafes throughout Melbourne.
You’ll find their blends in all corners of the city, including Rustica Canteen in the CBD and Richmond, Market Espresso at the Queen Victoria Market, Breakfast Thieves in Fitzroy, Staple in St Kilda and Wolf & Hound in Flemington.
Matt is Rumble’s Head Roaster, a former chef who hung up his whites for the chance to work in the ever-evolving world of coffee roasting. As for the coffee in question, Rumble is all about ethically sourcing beans from small farms known for their sustainable practices.
With these beans, Rumble offers two signature blends. The first is the Haymaker, Rumble’s go-to house blend, which offers a sweet, toffee-like complexity and deeper notes of orange and stone fruit. It’s designed for perennial, consistent deliciousness. The second blend is the Shadow Boxer, a sweet, caramel and chocolate dominated blend from Brazil and Papua New Guinea.
They also stock a range of single origins, which change seasonally. Depending on the time of year, you can usually expect to find something on offer from Panama, Guatemala, Kenya or Ethiopia.
Rumble doesn’t have an accompanying cafe – leaving the barista work to the experts, it chooses instead to focus on the art of roasting. That doesn’t mean you can’t visit – the roastery, based in Kensington, has an open-door policy when it comes to buying beans and home brewing equipment.
Rumble also offers public coffee cupping sessions for a gold coin donation, where you can learn about different varietals, flavour profiles and blends, and take home a bag of your favourite find. All donations go to Grounds for Health, an international non-profit organisation that works to prevent cervical cancer in developing countries.
Grounds for Health isn’t the only charity Rumble works with. It also takes part in the annual CafeSmart program, which assists people who are homeless or at risk.
Can’t make it to Kensington? You can also sign up for a monthly coffee subscription and get a 250g bag of Rumble’s finest blend delivered to you every 30 days. Your coffee is freshly roasted and shipped the very next day to ensure optimum freshness.
From their humble warehouse in Kensington, Rumble is causing a stir in the city’s coffee scene. Keep an eye on what they have planned next – it’s bound to be good.
