Smith Street is one of Melbourne’s foodiest areas, with almost any cuisine your heart desires just a click away. One culinary experience that may have been harder to find is Nepalese, but thanks to it’s newest recruit, Proud Sprout, you can stamp your Smith Street Passport one more time.
Proud Sprout is the second hospitality venture of owners Karishma and Waseem, following their cafe endeavour in Hawthorn, Little Temper. ‘Every sprout has its own story’, says Karishma, and their hospitality ventures since moving to Australia 10 years ago is theirs. Combining childhood memories and flavours of their respective Nepalese and Sri Lankan upbringings, the pair have come together to feed Collingwood locals with delicious fare in a contemporary yet cosy atmosphere that welcomes you back like an old friend.
When it comes to Proud Sprout’s food, Karishma knows what’s up. Armed with a lifetime of knowledge in Nepalese cooking and recipes inspired by her mother and grandparents cooking and her paddock to plate upbringing. This has influenced her modern Australian menu complete with southeast Asian flourishes. As such, all ingredients are sourced locally to ensure freshness, combining her passion for Australian produce with a love for the special flavours of Nepal.
The menu features dishes like the Rikshawala which full of Nepalese flavours and traditional ingredients, like sujuk, a dry, spicy sausage used in a lot of Southeast Asian cooking, paired with cumin infused cauliflower, potatoes, fried eggs and roti. Go all out by ordering the Nepalese Goat Curry – with slow cooked on the bone and drenched in Nepalese spices served with tomatoes and cumin infused basmati rice. On the other hand, Australian classics like the berry and cacao granola with banana and honey, as well as smashed avo of course are in popular demand.
Tapping into their immense knowledge of Melbourne’s cafe culture, Karishma and Waseem have given a great deal of thought to Proud Sprout’s coffee scene. Here you’ll find turmeric and matcha lattes for those wanting something a little different and not so caffeinated, right there alongside brews from Padre Coffee.
Proud Sprout has settled right in to its Smith Street digs, and is showing no signs of slowing down. Keep a lookout for takeaway lunch boxes and extended hours to accommodate for dinner sittings coming soon.
