The Stokehouse precinct really does have it all – sunset drinks and casual bar dining at Pontoon, laid-back take-away style fish and chips at their very own Paper Fish kiosk, and fine dining at Stokehouse. Paper Fish was the first instalment of the new Stokehouse development following the fire that burnt the beachfront restaurant to the ground in January 2014. Closely followed by Pontoon and, now, the upstairs fine dining Stokehouse restaurant, the trio have fast become an iconic St Kilda culinary destination.
Paper Fish has led the way towards a healthier alternative to traditional fish and chips. Not only is all seafood sustainably caught, but all packaging from delivery to service is sustainably made, so you can indulge with the knowledge that your meal is friendly to your body and to the earth.
Fresh fish among the likes of flathead, salmon and blue grenadier are on rotation depending on the catch of the day. Fresh salads perfectly compliment the delicious salty seafood (and chips of course), with options like cucumber and mint, Caesar or chickpea and fennel in the mix. If you’re looking to stray a little from the conventional, gourmet options like the coconut prawn tacos are plentifully offered. Innovative twists on old favourites like the humble potato cake are also on the menu, with sweet potato cakes and a lightly battered tempura-style Japanese potato cake to shake things up.
Whether you’re on your way to the beach or picking up takeaway and are in need of refreshment, its always a good time for a granita. These refreshing beverages come in flavours of pineapple and coconut, watermelon and mint and lemonade – take it one step further and spike it with a shot of vodka or gin to add a kick to your beach day. Alternatively, Balter Beers and Barokes wine in a can, make it simpler for you to have an ice-cold tipple on the sand without fussing with bottles and the like.
Paper Fish has beautifully captured the quintessential Australian summer vibe of long days spent on the beach turned into balmy nights with takeaway devoured as the sun goes down. Providing a healthier option to the signature Aussie summertime meal, there’s no wonder Paper Fish has a loyal following and a hefty fan base from St Kilda and beyond.
