Padre Coffee Brunswick East
438-440 Lygon St, Brunswick East
(03) 9381 1881
Operating since 2007, Padre Coffee has grown up with its home suburb of Brunswick East, as well as with the area’s now-devout coffee drinkers, many of whom have been buying their freshly roasted beans from Padre for almost a decade now.
It began as a two-man operation; The Brunswick East Project (now Padre Coffee Brunswick East), roasting, brewing and selling coffee under the one roof. The growing empire has since expanded to include four proprietary cafes, including one in Noosa, and a thriving wholesale business.
The East Brunswick home is as much a retail and learning centre as it is a cafe. The store stocks a carefully curated selection of manual and espresso brewing equipment, coffee grinders and of course, freshly roasted beans. The open and inviting space is designed to showcase their coffee gear, as well as the bean to cup process, and is complemented by their knowledgeable staff who are always ready to update your coffee IQ.
Padre roasts all their coffee in-house, and the intense aromas are part of the allure of the Brunswick East cafe. Beans are sourced from diverse growing regions, including India, Colombia, Ethiopia and Mexico, and their relationships with the growers span back many years, creating a personal partnership and deep appreciation for their origins.
Head Roaster Fay Kamanis, worked on the cafe floor in the early days of Padre and has certainly earnt her stripes. After a stint with H.A. Bennett (Australia’s leading green bean brokers) she returned to head the close knit roasting team. Year-round, Fay sources the best green beans seasonally available from across the world’s premier growing regions as well as leading the group in education, research and development.
In partnership with Padre’s founder Marinus, Fay helped create the in-house roasting software they use. ‘Roast IQ’ manages coffee from sample to dispatch, creating consistency in the roasting process. Padre’s commitment to coffee is seen in their heavy investment in training, testing and their top of the range equipment, which ensures they do justice to the growers’ hard work.
What makes Padre stand out is that it runs all of the coffees roasted in house, blends and single origins alike, through the grinders, giving customers a chance to taste a large range of flavour profiles. They have two house espresso blends and eight espresso single origins, a selection of which are offered each day
In line with the ethical and sustainable processes that characterise the business, Padre Brunswick East was the first cafe to partner with Reground, a service that collects used coffee grounds to recycle for use in gardens. The company was started by Padre barista Ninna Larsen who now runs the initiative full time (with the occasional cameo shift back on the Slayers.)
Aside from the expected espresso, Padre offers all manners of coffee experiences including cold drip, cold brew, batch brew, pour over, Chemex and syphon. Recently renovated, the Brunswick East roastery has a renewed focus on education and training, with a dedicated section for manual brewing and free weekly coffee education classes open to the public.
It’s clear coffee is the hero at Padre – the team’s passion for every element of the sourcing, roasting and brewing process shines through.
