Brothers, Yani and Nic Kabylakis, grew up in Oakleigh, so opening their own Artisan Doughnut and Specialty Coffee shop in this south-eastern suburb has been a momentous occasion.
The Oakleigh Doughnut Co (TODCO) sits at the gateway of Eaton Mall and is surrounded by a plethora of Greek cafes, delis, and specialty grocers.
The venue itself was cleverly designed by Studio Equator to reflect the Greek culture inherent to Oakleigh, while also blending a doughnut and coffee theme. Geometrical arches wrap around the front windows, while the interior features lots of fun colours, such as custom pink and white neon lights that resemble doughnuts, and artwork of Zeus holding a doughnut. White tiles serve at the ideal backdrop to the Blue vinyl banquets, which pay homage to the traditional Greek flag.
While the menu does have several Greek takes on doughnuts, like the Galakdough and Doughloumba, the boys are focused on classic flavours from all cultures, revived in the new-age doughnut. Matcha, Dragonfruit, and Tiramisu will all be featured on the menu in coming weeks, bringing a taste of the assortment of ethnicities that make up the ever-expanding community. Current playfully named doughnuts include the Halva Nice Day, Fairy dough-mother, and Quirkish Delight. All icing and most fillings are made in-house, and doughnuts are fried in rice bran oil.
Coffee is roasted by Five Senses, and extracted via a customised Synesso MVP. The Crompton Blend is used for all milk based coffee, while black coffee is made with rotating single origin beans. The Ethiopian Ardi delivers a fragrant cup, with sweet berry tones.
TODCO is taking much-loved classic flavours into the new age through the popular doughnut culture currently sweeping through Melbourne.
Open daily from 10am to 10pm weekdays, and 10am to 11pm weekends.
