Little Tommy Tucker is a refreshing addition to Melbourne’s cafe culture. Named after an English nursery rhyme, the venue is indeed a family friendly affair, dishing up a well rounded menu of seasonal eats with a side of specialty coffee.
Henry and Pan Lay have worked in the hospitality industry for as long as they can remember. Having owned a number of restaurants throughout Victoria, these self-confessed coffee geeks realised that venturing into Melbourne’s burgeoning cafe scene was the logical next step.
They selected Melbourne-based Dukes Coffee Roasters as the supplier for Little Tommy Tucker. Not only is the team at Dukes committed to ethically traded coffee, sourced from small farm communities and single estates, but they provide ongoing support and training to their cafes.
Having worked for two renowned roasting houses back in New Zealand, Anna Stewart quickly learned the ropes of espresso production and developed a passion for quality coffee. After moving to Melbourne, where the ever-evolving coffee climate is the stuff of caffeine lovers’ dreams, Anna worked as both head barista and manager for several venues, before joining the Little Tommy family as Manager.
Much like Anna, Head Barista, Nicki Clark, has been honing her specialty coffee-making skills across Australia and New Zealand for the past 18 years. Manning the machine at iconic Melbourne cafes such as Orange in Prahran, and St Kilda’s Leroy Espresso, Nicki is now proud to be part of the Little Tommy family, brewing and pouring cup after cup of Dukes coffee.
The Dukes House Blend is balanced and bright; a blend of beans sourced from Brazil, Nicaragua, Colombia and Ethiopia. With notes of red apple, caramel, milk chocolate and cherry, the blend pairs beautifully with milk and boasts a smooth complexity that can be enjoyed as a black coffee too. Dukes also supplies seasonal single origins from Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, Brazil, El Salvador and Colombia. In addition to espresso and milk-based coffee, you’ll find batch brew (both iced and hot) and pour over on offer. The team also experiments with
In addition to espresso and milk-based coffee, you’ll find batch brew (both iced and hot) and pour over on offer. The team also experiments with batch brew on a weekly basis, offering specials such as the Coffee Spritzer – coffee mixed with carbonated water and served over ice.
The diverse all-day menu features Kit- Kat hotcakes, eggs benedict with pulled lamb and harissa hollandaise, and grilled halloumi with pumpkin and spinach smash. For ‘Something Lunchy’ there’s chicken liver terrine on pumpkin sourdough, or slow-cooked pork belly with apple mustard mousse, crackling, pickled cabbage and chilli-fried egg on rye.
Such colourful food shines thanks to a fresh, minimal fit-out, featuring a backdrop of pale timber touches, earthy ceramic tableware and a few pops of greenery. Little Tommy Tucker offers room aplenty, with space for prams and hungry little ones, plus ample parking out the back.
Offering specialty coffee and delicious fare in an unintimidating environment, Little Tommy Tucker is just the ticket for relaxed caffeine sipping and brunching in Melbourne’s south east.
