Hidden just behind the hustle and bustle of Camberwell Junction lies a small cafe with a big heart. Slotting seamlessly into the stylish suburb of Hawthorn East, Little Pony aims to share a little bit of inner-city life with east enders.
Jay He opened the pocket-sized venue in 2016, making it the younger sibling of Blossom Espresso in Southbank. Jay’s passion for coffee is visible in every aspect of his venues, earning him a loyal following wherever he goes. He is dedicated to making consistently high quality specialty coffee and is always looking for ways to ensure his cafes remain friendly and interesting.
Cute is probably the best way to describe Little Pony. Take the name – Jay loves the loyalty, modesty and determined nature of the pony, choosing the horse to be a kind of lucky charm for his first solo venture. While it certainly is a ‘little’ pony, don’t let the name fool you – this venue has a lot of energy.
The central focus of Little Pony is coffee. Jay is incredibly attached to the diversity, variety and potential of the coffee bean and he aims to share this passion and wonder with all his customers. The beans come from iconic Melbourne roasters, Proud Mary. The Humbler blend is a medium roast, made up of beans from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, making for a rich and syrupy coffee with flavours of chocolate fudge, caramel and dates.
The blend is perfectly suited to the customer base at Little Pony, largely local residents and nearby office workers. Doubling as Head Barista, Jay also keeps a few alternative brews up his sleeve, offering Proud Mary batch brew and cold drip coffee for keen specialty coffee buffs.
Coffee choices are offered alongside classic breakfast and lunch fare. Classic pancakes and eggs on toast are spiced up by the addition of caramelised blueberries and truffled hollandaise respectively, while more innovative options like a winter mushroom and leek gratin are also available.
Little Pony was exclusively designed by local architects, Zwei, to be modern and bright. Each item was custom made, including the sleek La Marzocco coffee machine, which fits into a colour palette of white, blue and green. Bar seating at the window allows customers to enjoy a coffee while looking out onto the street and marvelling at the beauty of the historic Rivoli theatre across the road.
Little Pony’s consistently excellent coffee, delicious fare and modern architectural design has seen it earn a loyal following in a relatively short time. A welcome addition to the lively street, Little Pony is bringing inner-city chic to Hawthorn East one cold drip coffee at a time.
