You can have your coffee and drink it too, all while grabbing your weekly provisions at LaManna – a cafe within a supermarket that makes grocery shopping an experience rather than a chore.
It hasn’t been a simple trip for the LaManna legacy to get to where it is today. The family travelled from a small town in Italy to Melbourne, stepping out onto the tarmac at Essendon Airport with high-flying ambitions of opening a fruit shop. Owner, Vince LaManna, learnt from the best – his father and the founder of LaManna, Pasquale.
In 1953, Pasquale opened his first fruit shop ‘LaManna Fruit Land’ in West Preston. Over the following years, he opened up another 11 shops all over Melbourne, including Australia’s first self-serve fruit shop, as well as LaManna Bananas, the biggest banana wholesaler in the country. 35 years later, Pasquale’s son Vince started the online retail component, delivering quality produce to the homes of Melburnians and building the LaManna empire even further.
In 2010 Vince began his search for a larger site and decided to open in Essendon Fields. Today LaManna is a 7500 square metre retail precinct that has all your favourite provisions in the one space: fresh fruit and vegetables, butchers, a deli, fishmonger, bakery, patisserie, grocery, and liquor as well as an on-site cafe.
‘All your favourite provisions in the one space: fresh fruit and vegetables, butchers, a deli, fishmonger, bakery, patisserie, grocery, and liquor as well as an on-site cafe.’
Shopping at LaManna is not your usual supermarket experience. The concrete floors give the space its rustic market feel, while the open plan setting is spacious, with wide aisles and low shelving.
Start your shop with a stop at the cafe for breakfast, where you can enjoy dishes such as the mango chia pudding with raspberries, slivered almonds, shredded coconut and coconut chips. If you don’t get round to the groceries until later in the day, lunch may be the order of the day. Get your hands around the pulled pork burger with purple cabbage, pickles and jalapeño mayo with a side of chips.
After you’ve refuelled, head to the deli and stock up on everything you need for an antipasto platter: cold meats, cheeses and dips. The hardest part will be choosing which ones to take home – there are more than 60 different varieties of homemade dips to choose from. The in-house team of butchers and fishmongers is also on hand to assist with your selection.
Feel like spoiling yourself or a loved one? Pick up a bunch of flowers, an orchid or a succulent. They’ll even provide you with paper and ribbon to wrap in-store.
LaManna knows what an excellent shopping experience should be like. An enormous range of grocery items and a carefully crafted cafe make for the perfect supermarket trip, making it the one-stop shop for all your foodie needs.
