Nestled in a tiny hole-in-the-wall at the buzzing Footscray Market, Hey Zeus is a little cafe doing big things in the coffee world.
Owners, Randi Naidu and William Jolley, are long-time fans of the blessed bean, having appreciated its complex qualities for a number of years. Natives of Wellington and Darwin respectively, both moved to the big smoke in the 2000s and fell in love with Melbourne’s hospitality industry almost immediately. They worked in a number of the city’s restaurants before realising that they shared the same dream – to open a place of their own. Melbourne’s vibrant cafe scene had them hooked, so the search for the perfect location began.
Hey Zeus opened in Footscray Market in mid-2016, reflecting the suburb’s vibe and catering to its customer base, ensuring that every tradie, commuter and marketgoer could enjoy a unique yet delicious cafe experience.
For the duo, the quality of ingredients is paramount to producing a product they are proud of. With the chance to choose from a number of outstanding roasters and suppliers, a generic bean and average coffee was not an option. After meeting with Allpress Espresso and taking a tour of the roastery, it was an easy choice.
Hey Zeus uses Allpress’ Full City blend, a rich coffee with long fruit flavours and a spicy finish. Although the team considered using one of the more popular blends, after trialling the entire range they realised they couldn’t go past the incredible flavour of Full City.
Vietnamese pour over and batch brew also feature on the list of coffees, while beans from Rumble, TinMan and Proud Mary are often rotated for black styles of coffee.
Cap off your market trip with something from the fresh seasonal menu. Will’s background in fine dining means dishes are elevated from simple to sensational. Try The Cure – beetroot-cured salmon, rye crisps, dill creme fraiche, avocado mousse, cucumber jelly and fennel salad, or fill your belly with the Getting Lei’d – Up In Smoke’s pulled pork on a Japanese milk roll, with chipotle mayo, pineapple and chilli salsa, topped with pork crackling.
Footscray is home to an eclectic and multicultural customer base of daily commuters, local office workers, market attendees and a large number of construction workers. In light of this, the team has taken on the responsibility to continually learn about the craft of coffee and pass this information onto their customers.
With this same philosophy, Randi and Will also celebrate the cultural diversity of its area, supporting local refugee and migrant charities, and displaying artwork by women from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.
Hey Zeus unites all that is good about Melbourne’s hospitality industry: passion and a love for all things multicultural. Together, Randi and Will have created a space that uniquely showcases the best of the west.
