Cheltenham’s newest cafe is keeping it frank. Named after the owner’s late grandfather, Frank’s is honest and direct in its philosophy and offering.

Owner, Harry Butler, wanted to provide locals with a space where they can feel at home, where staff know customer’s names and their coffee order. Located on a quiet strip in Cheltenham, the relaxed environment is now the go-to for locals who want great food, coffee and conversation.

The simply worded menu appears modest, but once the food arrives modesty flies out the large retractable windows. Designed by Head Chef, Eli Faye, the menu’s intention is to exceed expectations.

The dishes are influenced by Asian and French flavours, seamlessly combining the two. With a large offering of vegetarian, vegan, dairy free and gluten-free options, the food is innovative and unique.

The breakfast menu offers an inventive vegan “scrambled eggs” – tofu scramble, tomatoes, smoked eggplant puree, spinach pancakes and pepitas. For something sweet, try the mini cinnamon doughnuts, soft toasted meringue, vanilla ice cream, rhubarb and white chocolate.

Lunch offers a heartier fare, with a grass-fed Wagyu burger and French fries, or a crispy chicken Asian slaw with soba noodles. However, it’s the beef rib bao that really stands out – beef rib, bao, daikon, kimchi, chilli kewpie mayo, presented like a piece of art.

The restaurant space was designed by the team at Ewert Leaf. The wood detailing, white walls and luscious indoor plants have a calming effect. However, the open-plan kitchen is the standout feature. It enables diners to experience everything that is happening inside the kitchen.

There is an array of seating options, from the long timber communal table to the dark-chocolate leather booth seating and the bar facing the street – the space allows you to read the paper and have your morning coffee, or a catch up with a large group of friends.

Frank’s mantra comes down to the people involved. From the customers that come in and out everyday, to the friendly staff and creative chefs, Frank’s is a place created for everyone to enjoy and feel at home.
