Let’s face it. A bakery that takes coffee seriously is not too common these days. But this Spotswood bakery with an American twist is leading the charge, one perfectly brewed cup at a time.
Owned and run by husband and wife duo, Orlando Artavilla and Toula Ploumidis, Candied Bakery has been delivering the goods to Spotswood locals since 2012. After selling the cafe they opened together in Brunswick East, Sugardough Panificio and Patisserie, the pair took time off to travel around the US. It was during this trip that they found the inspiration to create Candied Bakery. Their aim? Simple. To bake beautiful, freshly baked goods and serve great coffee courtesy of expert baristas.
Head Barista, John Panuccio, boasts 13 years experience within the coffee industry, brewing each cup at Candied Bakery with passion and precision. The bakery offers a range of single origin and filter coffee from premium Melbourne roasters, Proud Mary, which directly sources some of the best coffees from around the world. Depending on the day, you might find a blend hailing from the likes of Guatemala, Ethiopia, Costa Rica or Panama.
The house blend, Humbler, is made with beans sourced from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. It is rich in chocolate and panela sugar flavours and the full body pairs perfectly with Candied’s sweet and savoury baked goods.
At Candied, those with a sweet tooth will revel in the range of decadent home made desserts. Inspired by Orlando and Toula’s American travels, the rotating menu features everything from key lime pie to jelly donuts and cinnamon buns, as well as Aussie favourites like lamingtons, fruit buns and Nutella croissants.
Everything is made in-house, from the Apple Pie shakes with homemade soft serve to the fresh organic sourdough. If you’re after something sans sugar, there are savoury pies, blue cheese croissants, and chipotle pulled pork buns.
The interior is simple yet inviting, perfect for takeaway or, if you can nab a seat, dining in. Display cabinets are absolutely bursting with freshly baked items while fresh white walls are complemented by timber benches and hanging greenery. Rich, dark espressos are served in bright yellow cups, and lattes in glasses on matching yellow saucers to cleverly complement the Bakery’s neon yellow sign and stools.
Candied Bakery is anything but your standard bakery. A welcome addition to Melbourne’s west, there’s really no need to make two stops for your baked goods and coffee this side of the Westgate. Candied is the best of both worlds, all in one place.
