A pioneer in the Australian coffee industry, Campos, with founder Will Young and his team, have devoted themselves to the search for the best in specialty coffee.
Located on bustling Elgin Street, the Campos roasters and cafe has been looking after the caffeine needs of locals, university students and true coffee lovers since 2010, spreading a love of the blessed bean near and far.
The Campos story and their love of coffee is one that goes back to 1997, when founder Will Young was served a specialty coffee that quite literally changed his life. It inspired an epiphany that saw him dedicate his days to sharing just how great specialty coffee could be. Will worked as a barista and roaster before opening his first cafe in Sydney’s Newtown and soon enough, the streets of Carlton were calling his name.
At the Melbourne cafe visitors will find an on-site roastery and espresso bar, with a team of coffee devotees and self-described coffee nerds responsible for ensuring you start the day in the best way possible. When you arrive, don’t be afraid to have a chat to the friendly team and see what’s on offer. The Superior Blend is the go-to for espresso and features notes of sweet red fruit with caramel and chocolate overtones. However, it’s by no means the only option. The single origins are sourced from all over the world and change with the seasons – at any one point, you could find beans from Colombia, Ethiopia, Kenya or Costa Rica.
In sourcing the beans for your brew, the Campos philosophy is simple: coffee only tastes good when it’s made ethically and with care. The company goes straight to the source, meeting the producers, their families and the locals, ensuring that their contributions are benefitting the community.
This intimate connection with coffee is also seen in the design. As with all Campos cafes, green is the feature colour, seen in the wall colours, light fittings and exterior mural, created by emerging Melbourne artist, Chris Edser. The open space is completed by a long standing table – fitted with power points for hardworking students – a nook with comfortable chairs, cushions and tables for the brunch goers, and window seats to look out onto the classically Carlton streetscape.
If sitting and sipping is more your style, complete your coffee with a delicious breakfast or lunch. The smashed avocado with cherry tomatoes and feta may grab your attention, but it’s hard to look past the simple yet oh-so-effective ham, cheese and tomato croissant.
Made for all to enjoy, Campos Coffee Carlton will satisfy all your daily needs. From the tired students needing their caffeine fix and a quick charge, to the brunch crowd searching for their new favourite cafe – Campos has a spot for everyone.
