A collaboration between Madamimadam Coffee Roasters and a Fitzroy creative, Attaboy Roy combines an old school espresso bar and new age eatery, serving up its own hand-crafted specialty coffee, inspired cocktails and wholesome food.
Fitzroy local, Morris Yaziji, and his crew run the show at Attaboy Roy, along with Uncle Derek who holds the title of founder, Head Roaster and all-round caffeine guru, boasting more than 25 years of experience in the coffee industry. After first laying eyes on the venue, “attaboy” was the first word to fall from his mouth – an informal expression of encouragement perfectly suited to the Fitzroy space, which was practically dripping with potential.
Attaboy Roy’s Head Barista is Polly Flaherty – a dedicated coffee lover who spends most of her downtime sculpting; the perfect pastime for keeping those hardworking hands in fine form. The coffee, of course, comes from in-house roasters, Madamimadam. The team scouts ethically sourced beans from farmers and traders located in some of the top coffee-producing regions around the world, including Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, India and Papua New Guinea.
Attaboy Roy’s house blend is the Madam Reviver; a rich roast with notes of caramel, dark chocolate, roasted almonds and a touch of citrus to keep things fresh. The blend is bold enough to hold its own as an espresso or black coffee, and brings equally impressive game to milk-based numbers. All of your typical brews are available, as well as the ever-popular cold drip, where water is dripped slowly through the coffee to release subtle flavour nuances often missed when coffee is extracted at the usual higher temperature.
When they say they’re an all-day eatery, the folks at Attaboy Roy aren’t kidding around. You’ll find breakfast,
brunch, lunch, pizza and share plates big and small, catering for practically every time of day and all inklings of hunger. It’s also packed with creative vegan and gluten free options. A regular brunch favourite is the Fitzroy Waffles, served with passionfruit, walnut crumble, pistachio ice cream, fresh berries and Persian fairy floss. For something to drink, try Attaboy’s signature espresso cocktail, Espresso Martini– a blend of their very own Madamimadam coffee mixed with vanilla vodka and kahlua.
The fit-out combines recycled and industrial elements. Dark timber flooring and a charcoal feature wall frame a spacious dining room, while pops of copper, blonde timber and greenery keep things fun and fresh. A big draw is the Kerr Street corner, an undercover, outdoor space just perfect for kicking back with a drink in hand, where the temptation to people-watch battles with the banter of the table.
Located on Fitzroy’s bustling and ever expanding Brunswick Street, Attaboy Roy is a down-to-earth dose of northside delight, where great coffee, fabulous food and good times come together.
