Tucked away in a residential street opposite Tooronga Station, 30 Mill Espresso offers locals and commuters a warm and welcoming spot for their morning brew.
When you consider the stature of those behind it, it’s no wonder the cafe has become somewhat of a local legend. Owned and operated by the Moussi sisters, Monique, Natasha and Michelle, 30 Mill is one of the latest in their line of successful cafes. The trio grew up running around their parents’ restaurants, learning all the necessary skills, tips and tricks to one day enter the industry themselves. Eventually, they simply couldn’t escape the appeal of the city’s constantly evolving coffee scene: 30 Mill was established in 2013, with the sisters running the business. They continued by opening a number of successful cafes around Melbourne –
Miss Frank and Morris + Heath joined this illustrious club soon after.
Over the years the sisters have watched the specialty coffee industry evolve. Throughout all of these changes, they have remained dedicated to producing high volumes of caffeine, without compromising on quality. Therefore, when it comes to the world of coffee, Monique, Natasha and Michelle are constantly improving their knowledge about various products on the market, ensuring they are able to identify the subtle differences in each blend.
It is no surprise then that 30 Mill’s house blend is a small-batch, five-bean blend, sourced from a private Melbourne roaster. It comprises beans from Brazil, Costa Rica, Papua New Guinea, Colombia and Honduras, packing a sweet, caramel aroma with notes of rich hazelnut, and crisp blueberry acidity.
Upon any morning of the week, you can wrap your hands around a perfectly brewed espresso or cold drip, or expand your coffee knowledge by sampling weekly single-origin brews from Collingwood-based roaster, Proud Mary.
Indeed, 30 Mill is an ode to all things seasonal and local. If you have time for breakfast or lunch, the fare is not to be missed.
A wholesome kale and halloumi salad is topped with roasted almonds, roasted pumpkin and a poached egg, all drizzled with a raspberry vinaigrette, while the Meathead Burger is everything a burger should be – juicy beef on a brioche bun with tomato sauce, aioli, Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, jalapeño and pickled beetroot. There are super salads, nourish bowls and chia puddings, plus a number of appropriately indulgent offerings, such as coconut and ricotta hotcakes, or a pulled pork eggs benny.
Servicing everyone from early-morning commuters rushing to make the 8.05 train, to new mums itching for a well-deserved caffeine hit, 30 Mill Espresso is a true community hub, offering great coffee, inventive brunch, and good old-fashioned customer service.
