For a pub meal with a twist, head to the Carlton Club Diner – an inner city restaurant serving a seasonal, plant-based menu that doesn’t sacrifice on flavour.
The Carlton Club was taken over by Tracey Lester (Windsor Castle and Builders Arms Hotel) in late 2005. Tracey has redeveloped the historic building into a stylish city venue with a reputation for delicious and nutritious pub fare. In 2016, the menu was transformed into a plant-based, vegan and vegetarian offering.
The innovative, updated menu uses locally and ethically sourced ingredients – organic where possible – and is chemical, gluten, dairy, meat and refined sugar free.
Customers are encouraged to take a seat among the quirky decor to sample the delicious menu. Start with a bowl of salt and vinegar kale chips, or a zucchini pretzel with fava bean dip, to wake up your tastebuds and prepare them for an exciting culinary journey.
The Diner offers a range of vegan burgers that make for an excellent lunch or dinner. Try the carrot sub – carrot bolognaise with carrot spaghetti, walnut parmesan and basil, for a twist on a well-loved favourite or opt for a more adventurous beetroot burger – beetroot and black bean patty with fried green tomato, Sriracha mayonnaise, jalapeño, cheese and crispy onion make up this spicy stack.
If a bowl of healthy goodness is more up your alley, try the salad of scotch kale, spiced beetroots, pickled nashi pear, macadamia nut ‘cream’ and mung bean sprouts. Regardless of what you choose to order, rest assured that everything on the menu is wholesome and delicious.
This even extends to the desserts – a selection of house made NiceCream sundaes are made with coconut milk. For a sweet treat, try the white sesame NiceCream with salted banana caramel, rosemary and chocolate sauce.
All of the delicious desserts and tasty mains can be washed down with one of the Diner’s shakes – think strawberry and beet, and hazelnut cacao – or with a glass of beer, wine or cider.
Once you’ve finished your meal, head upstairs for a cocktail or two at the tropical themed rooftop bar, Palmz. At Palmz, tropical flora juxtaposes the city skyline, and talented bartenders behind a bamboo tiki-bar serve some of the most refreshing drinks in the city.
For a tropical island experience, order a Raspberry Beret – a refreshingly fruity concoction of white rum, orange, pineapple, apple and passionfruit that will transport you to a Pacific island in just one sip. If fruity is not for you, fear not, order the ‘blokey’ Blacksmith – a manly mix of rum, sherry, caramel, coffee, chocolate and White Rabbit Dark Ale.
The Carlton Club Diner and Palmz offer unique experiences; for delicious and nutritious pub fare with a twist, the Diner is exceptional every time, and for a night of cocktails under the stars Palmz is certainly worth climbing the stairs.
