There’s no bar more ‘Melbourne’ than Section 8. With a shipping container bar, stacked pallets as chairs and graffiti-lined walls, it represents the very best of the city.

Hidden down Tattersalls Lane in the heart of Melbourne’s Chinatown, the hipster haven has solidified its place as a permanent pop-up. Open all year round, seven days a week, it is the perfect beer garden to make your regular.

Drinks are served out of a shipping container, which has been converted to include beer fridges, cocktail stations and wine racks. From inside its four walls, the outgoing and colourful bartenders serve an extensive cocktail list and a selection of top-shelf spirits, as well as a range of bottled brews. The craft beer options are broad, reaching all the way to New Zealand and the US, but also celebrating the breweries doing great things on Australian soil.

The food menu makes for the perfect after-work snack, with dishes ideal for sharing. The pork scratchings and Jamaican-style chicken wings, served with caramelised lime aioli, are a great way to say hello to 5pm. However, if sharing isn’t your thing, there’s also a range of huge subs, sure to satisfy any lingering hunger pangs. The most popular is the Philly cheesesteak, with grilled rump steak, melted jack cheddar, roast onion jam and charred peppers – need we say more?

If you’re after some vibes, Section 8 regularly hosts local and international DJs. The line-ups frequently include some epic names and often come with a theme – previous events have taken inspiration from beach parties, urban oases and block parties.

Section 8 is one of the CBD’s most popular bars, so make sure you get there early. It can be busy, but the atmosphere makes for a great night out. After lining up, squeeze your way to the front of the bar and take the time to get into the groove of the place – it’s worth it.
