Think Fitzroy’s bar scene has everything? You never realise something is missing until it arrives. Enter The Elysian, a neighbourhood whisky bar that caters for novices and aficionados alike.

The guys behind the Fitzroy watering hole are Kelvin Low and Yao Wong, formerly of Whisky and Alement and Bar White Oak – suffice to say, they know their whisky from their whiskey. Realising that Melbourne lacked cosy whisky bars like the ones they loved in Japan, the duo has created a small venue with a mighty whisky selection.

Kelvin said “many of the great cocktail bars you visit in Japan would have a killer whisky selection and the whisky bars there would absolutely blow you away. We just wanted to bring a taste of that Japanese bar culture back here and maybe jog a bit of nostalgia in those that have been over there and experienced it.”

Concise but eclectic, the whisky offering focuses on independent bottles, opening the doors to unique flavour profiles and ageing techniques that can’t be found in the distilleries’ official releases.

Malt lovers aren’t the only ones who will enjoy the drinks selection: you’ll also find seasonally inspired cocktails, a carefully curated wine list and a rotating range of craft beers.

Snack on the changing selection of charcuterie and cheeses if you’re feeling a little peckish. Larger food offerings are on their way – The Elysian is teaming up with Chef, Ryo Kitahara of Assiette de Parti towards the end of January 2017 to bring patrons delicious fare to enjoy with a fine tipple.
