Any good winery requires an excellent selection of bottles, delicious farm-to-table food and a comfortable space to indulge in both. While Hong Kong may be more concrete than country, The Winery provides a pocket of sunshine amid the vast urban jungle of the city, attracting those who love to spend an afternoon or evening poring over fine wines and a sumptuous spread of fresh produce.
Bathed in plenty of natural light and located in the quaint neighbourhood of Sai Ying Pun, The Winery feels worlds away from the towering skyscrapers of the city centre. Strip away the traffic and bustling sidewalks outside, and you’ll feel like you’ve walked straight into a lovely home in the countryside.
Take a seat in the brightly lit foyer, scattered with turquoise armchairs, lush green planters and wicker furniture. Alternatively, head upstairs to the main dining room, past the red brick wall. Here you’ll have a view of the open kitchen, which means a front-row seat to the colourful plates and platters of cheese and charcuterie that go whizzing past.
The best way to start the meal is, naturally, with a glass of wine. The Winery’s selection focuses mainly on the varietals found in South Australia – including a dedicated Penfold’s cellar selection – and New Zealand, while dipping into Italy, France and South Africa. There’s plenty to explore, but if you’ve dropped by on a sunny afternoon, you can’t go wrong with a fruity rosé or a glass of prosecco.
For those wishing to learn a little more about the different varieties, head along to the team’s wine tasting events, where you’ll have a chance to sample incredible drops and meet some of the world’s premier winemakers.
If you feel like starting with something special, peruse the rather inventive cocktail list. Classics sit alongside more creative concoctions like the refreshing Flower Market: Hendrick’s gin, tonic, St Germain and a garnish of fresh flowers; or the sweeter Fig Cooler with a mix of bourbon, muddled figs and maple syrup topped with ginger beer. When it comes to the food, most dishes are designed for sharing and recipes borrow influences from around the world for a truly eclectic menu. Like any good winery, there are charcuterie boards laden with cured meats and condiments, pate paired with rustic farmhouse breads as well as different varieties of cheeses to sample, including the signature baked brie with fresh honeycomb and toast.
More adventurous dishes are rife with Asian influences. Try the pork belly bao, the yakitori chicken skewers or the sweet potato tempura served with a zesty chipotle mayonnaise. For vegetarians, an extensive salad menu is available, including fig and prosciutto with goat’s cheese and balsamic, and chargrilled broccolini with toasted hazelnuts and orange.
The hearty, fresh fare carries over to the weekends when families spill into The Winery to partake in the delicious brunch offerings. These include steel-cut oats with coconut milk, banana and honey as well as creamy eggs Benedict with a side of ham or smoked salmon.
With the lovely alfresco vibe and all-day menu, you may just find yourself staying from morning to night – after all, if you can’t make it to the Barossa or Napa valleys, The Winery might be the next best thing.
