Ask a local where to go on your first night out in Hong Kong for drinks with an excellent view, and you’ll likely be directed to SEVVA. Founded in 2008 by well-known fashion and style guru Bonnae Gokson, SEVVA is the go-to place for a quintessentially Hong Kong experience. Here you’ll find A-list celebrity clientele soaking up spectacular panoramas, fine gastronomy and drinks to match in a warm, refined environment.
Over the years, SEVVA’s been known to attract customers from the most elite circles of society: international figures, artists, musicians, actors, politicians and the everyday mix of business professionals and social influencers looking for the spot to see and be seen. If you want the chance to rub shoulders with the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Sting and Robert DeNiro, you’ve come to the right spot.
This alone makes SEVVA arguably the most sought-after drinking spot on the island and, if it’s your first time in Hong Kong, you won’t want to miss it.
To understand SEVVA is to get to know Bonnae, the creator of the brand. With her impeccable style, Bonnae is one of Hong Kong’s most renowned tastemakers and fashion icons. Other than exuding a sophisticated sense of flair and class, she’s also a restaurateur, hospitality entrepreneur and even an awardwinning author.
Taking all of this into consideration, it’s easy to see why stepping into SEVVA feels like a luxurious oasis in the heart of the city. First, there’s the sheer size of the space – covering 2000 square metres, including two dining rooms, lounge and bar, as well as a wrap-around terrace. Sitting on the 25th-floor penthouse of Prince’s Building, the commanding views from the terrace are impossible to beat.
Inside, the grandiose restaurant is pared down with subtle dashes of colour and stunning artworks, creating a relaxed elegance. As with all her venues, Bonnae designs the interior herself with her vision for SEVVA brought to life by New York-based Tsao & McKown Architects.
For afternoon tea or cocktail hour, head to the lounge. A live garden wall provides green relief next to granite tables, which sport a fine selection of beautiful coffee table books. Fashionably mismatched sofas and ottomans create an ideal spot to while away the afternoon with a cocktail or one of SEVVA’s exquisite cakes. Take in the sounds of classical arias and jazz as the light streams in from the floor-to-ceiling windows, hitting the green vertical garden on the opposite wall and making you feel as if you’re in a secluded courtyard.
When you’re ready to dine, the Bankside and Harbourside dining rooms are where the action unfolds. Bankside emanates elegance with its grand, vaulted ceilings, extravagant chandelier and high walls adorned with coveted pieces of modern art, while Harbourside exudes an unpretentious and ‘easy glam’ ambience with a gigantic silk floral dome that never ceases to amaze.
The menu is inspired by Hong Kong’s cultural diversity with a cosmopolitan mix of authentic flavours. SEVVA is home to five kitchens, each with its own distinctive style. The Indian kitchen delivers exotic dishes and innovative dosas, while the Chinese kitchen specialises in the careful balance of flavours for which Cantonese and Shanghainese cuisines are renowned. The Western kitchen shows off European and American offerings while the Asian kitchen offers tastes from around the continent including fresh flavours from Thailand and delicate Japanese-inspired dishes. There’s also the renowned dessert corner where a range of delectable sweets are crafted with care. The culinary team at each kitchen prepares signature dishes that are fresh, wholesome and honest, using produce sourced from local markets and around the world. These include crispy noodles with king razor clams and Hokkaido scallops with black bean and chilli sauce. For a light, refreshing meal, a fresh artichoke heart and crabmeat salad with lemon and parsley oil will tantalise taste buds.
The bar is all part of the experience at SEVVA. Taste Bar provides a calming space that engages your senses as you explore the selection of wines and exquisite cocktails, crafted by SEVVA’s award-winning mixologists. Some of the most popular cocktails are twists on the classics: the Guava Mojito, Chocolate Martini or Sex-in-the-City Sangria made with rosé and strawberries. Pair your refreshments with tasty bites from the tapas-style menu, including kung po prawns and succulent Wagyu steak with garlic chip bites. Just like SEVVA’s other dining spaces, the soundtrack for Taste Bar has been meticulously curated to match the character of the room – here it’s jazz, bossa nova and R&B funk tunes that lend a sultry backdrop to the night.
Of course, no visit to SEVVA is complete without a trip to the outdoor terrace, where Hong Kong’s sparkling skyline awaits. The terrace is lit with glowing stools, while comfortable couches are scattered with throw pillows; it’s the ultimate spot where international jet-setters, as well as Hong Kong’s well-heeled, come to feel the city at their feet.
