La Cabane Wine Bistro
Hollywood Road, 62, Central, Hong Kong
Inspired by the concept of a cabin tucked away in the woods, La Cabane Wine Bistro is a welcome retreat from the city, where friends come to share secrets, food and wine. Once inside, the intimate space offers all the charm of a French bistro with an incredible selection of natural wines, share plates, cheeses and charcuterie platters.
The cosy wine bistro is the culmination of many years of hard work from Karim Hadjadj and Cristobal Huneeus. In 2010 they opened their debut venture – a wine cellar, just a few doors down the road, with the aim of introducing natural wines to Hong Kong locals.
After a warm welcome and incredible success at the cellar, this naturally progressed into the creation of a space where people could come inside and enjoy the wines. In late 2012, Karim and Cristobal opened the doors to their French bistro, La Cabane.
With a focus on wines from all over the world, La Cabane’s list offers more than 200 options to choose from. While the selection focuses on French wines, drops from small artisan growers throughout Georgia, Australia, Chile, Spain or Italy are also scattered throughout the list.
If you’re overwhelmed by the offerings – not surprising considering the span of the list – ask a friendly staff member for advice. The team undergoes weekly wine training and conversations with featured winemakers, so they know their way around the selection. If you’re interested in expanding your vinicultural knowledge, La Cabane offers a range of events and tastings throughout the year.
While the focus is clearly on wine, the bistro also features a rotating selection of snacks, share plates and desserts. The kitchen team share a passion for natural and organic products and are inspired by the creativity of French cuisine, with its bold flavours and strong personality.
Start your La Cabane experience with a selection of Apero dishes like the crispy ham and cheese croquettes or the ever-delicate blinis topped with tomato and anchovies. Share plates include the beef tartar and polenta fries, or the foie gras and duck breast pâté en croute, served with tasty mushroom pickles.
For something a little more warming, order a plate of the fried frogs legs for a crispy French delight. The seared salmon, with green peas, crunchy pickled carrots and an almond emulsion is also an excellent option to warm the cockles of your heart. When it comes to dessert, the culinary team’s talents are on full display, with a bitter chocolate fondant paired with vanilla cream just one example of the tempting French-inspired creations.
The team at La Cabane follows a strict no-waste policy, which extends to the design of the space. Conceived by Elsa Jean de Dieu, with a touch of DIY inspiration from Karim and Cristobal, the venue favours recycled materials.
Visit La Cabane for its incredibly extensive selection of natural wines, but stay for the delicious fare and friendly service. It truly is a little piece of French heaven in Hong Kong.
